Identifying independent and dependent variables:

Jerry is not happy with the bats his team uses. He claims that his personal bat is longer and that he can hit the ball further with it. The coach thinks Jerry is muy loco! So….Jerry decides to run an experiment to find his answer to the problem:

Does the length of the bat affect the distance the baseball travels?

Jerry goes to the store and buys 4 identical bats, however, each one is a different length.

Jerry rents a pitching machine and begins his experiment.

Using each bat, he hits the ball 10 times. After each hit, he measures the distance from home plate to the spot where the ball landed.

Jerry calculates the average distance he hit the ball with each bat.

Yes! The distance the ball travels. This is the dependent variable (data).

Great! The length of the bats. This is the independent variable.

If you said TIME, you’re absolutely right. How LONG does the flashlight stay on?

Long suggests length of time in minutes, seconds, hours, days, etc.
