Objectives

• Identify benefits of using iPads in the Science classroom

• Discover some great iPad apps that can enhance the Science curriculum

• Examine ways in which these apps can be used in the classroom

Today’s Meet

Go to Today’s Meethttp://todaysmeet.com/iscience

1. Introduce Yourself

(Name, Position, District, Grade Level)

2. Do you currently use iPads and/or Apps in your Science classroom?

The Science Classroom

Page 7: It's Elementary: iPads in the Science Classroom - TCEA 2015

Starting a Topic

Have students create a mind map of prior knowledge, one

which can then be repeated at the end of the unit to show

the difference in the students’ learning.

Students could create a Word Cloud of what they already

know and then contrast this at the end of the topic .

Labeling & Identifying

Have students learn names and identify different parts of a

specific diagram or picture. Students can show their

understanding by labeling pictures or diagrams.

Example:

If students had to label parts of a plant or parts of the

human body then this app would be perfect for them to

show their understanding.

Labeling & Identifying Con’t

Another example is to have students draw pictures using

words.

Example:

If students were studying the human body and they could

draw word art skeletons labeling different bones

Labeling & Identifying Con’t

Students can also label pictures using the app Pic

Collage.

Example:

Students can label pictures showing their

understanding of different terms or

scientific facts

Investigations

Have students plan, carry out, and analyze investigations.

Example:Students can plan the investigation, share pictures of equipment,

write the process and even make predictions. The Book Creator

app is great for this process because rather than write everything

children can record themselves, making it easier for children who

maybe struggle with their writing therefore letting them purely

focus on the science and the investigation.

Investigations Con’t

Have students use the iPad camera to take

pictures or record themselves carrying out

the experiment.

If the process will take a longer period of time, time

lapse apps such as iLapse or Hyperlapse could be

used to record the results

Page 15: It's Elementary: iPads in the Science Classroom - TCEA 2015

Investigations Con’t

Again using Book Creator, children can analyze

and evaluate their investigation using text or

recordings.

Every little bit of the investigation is kept in an eBook

which can be saved and shared online.

Explaining Processes and

Sharing Facts & Research

Students can demonstrate their learning by explaining

processes using apps.

Example:

Students can use pictures, videos, text, highlighting tools

while recording themselves explaining a process such as -

the life cycle of a plant, or the relationship between Earth,

Sun and Moon, or explaining how different circuits work, the

possibilities are endless.

Chirp

• Free (iPhone app)

• Gives students a Twitter-like experience without going outside your network

• Students can ‘chirp’ text, images, or URLs

• Only other iPads with Chirp on AND that hear the chirp will receive the information

• Easy way for students to share information in a 21st century way

Download and explore the app for your group. Take a few minutes to explore the app. Be ready to answer the following questions:1. How can this app support scientific

thinking in your classroom?2. In what specific lessons might you use this

app with your students?3. What might you need to think through for

your students to be successful?
