A brief summary:

Caixa Mgica is a software and solutions provider for GNU/Linux based Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) Systems.

Linux- Caixa Mgica is the main Linux Distribution available in Portugal and in 2000 one of the co-founders was awarded the Prmio Milnio 2000 Expresso award for the project.

Originally based in the research arm of ISCTE,
ADETTI it soon outgrew the available resources
and has relocated twice to larger offices.

Caixa Magica's main office is now found in the
building that used to be the main Portuguese
Stock Exchange.

Who, where and what?

The distribution is available at hundreds of Portuguese Computer stores and specialised resellers.

It is a SME and has 15 full time staff as well as many more that work under other companies but work on Caixa Mgica projects.

Along with working for the incumbent Telecommunication operator, Portugal Telecom, CMS works with a variety of other companies and government bodies.

The Caixa Magica Operating System is installed on many Hospital, Municipal Authorities and more than 1,100 schools as well as over 10 universities.

The System has also been installed in many enterprise environments and over 650,000 computers as part of widescale Portuguese initiatives.

Who we work for continued

Caixa Mgica works also with the Portuguese Army for deploying more than 120 GNU/Linux based security appliances.

Since 2006 CMS has been sub-contracted by the Portuguese Ministry of Justice for maintaining Linux servers in critical data-centers.

Caixa Mgica works in many multi-national European based research projects. After the conclusion of the EDOS (EU FP6 STREP) based project it is now actively working on another, MANCOOSI.

Many other projects in the pipeline and that have been bidded for.

DUDF error reporting

On the context of the MANCOOSI European project we developed dudf.caixamagica.pt, a reporting platform about installation problems that users have with our package installer, apt-rpm.

It has been collecting reports and generating statistics about problems and corresponding packages since September 2009.

It serves both as a source of information for Caixa Magica QA and as input for the MANCOOSI solver competition.
