IEEE 802.11 Revolution • IEEE 802.11n:

Higher-throughput improvements using MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output antennas) and operating in 2.4GHz and 5GHz band (Sep. 2009)

• IEEE 802.11ac: Very High Throughput <6 GHz; potential improvements over 802.11n: better modulation scheme (expected ~10% throughput increase), wider channels (estimate in future time 80 to 160 MHz), multi user MIMO; only operating in 5GHz band (Dec. 2013)

Airtime Fairness

• All clients, regardless of standards supported, obtain roughly the same amount of airtime • 11n client are given a slight preference that 11n could kept its better performance

Page 24: Introduction to 4ipnet wireless access points

Band Steering

• AP will steer clients that are capable of operating in the 5GHz band away from 2.4GHz networks and towards 5GHz networks

• The right AP rejects 2.4GHz connections from the client, even if the client were to know the SSID and manually connect. This forces all 5GHz users to only connect to 5GHz network in essence.

Optimal Client Filtering

• To filter out clients that will negatively impact the AP’s overall throughput • Through a set of the thresholds

Deployment Level

Architecture Planning

• Before AP deployment, administrator should make sure the enough amount of corresponding ports from switches.

• AP deployment is not unique as long as it meets customer requirements based on the environment, indoors and outdoors.

Architecture Planning

• Different location might have different user behaviors, like conference room, the hotel room, the beach, the university, or the airport.

• Administrator should keep in mind what users’ roles are and decide the corresponding policies.
