Lesson Plan

Unit 1: Looking In (Chapters 1-4)

Topic: Increasing communication skills (Ch.4-Reaching Out); Emotions (Ch.4 LOLI)

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this lesson, students should be able to:

Define communication and identify ways of defining communication Identify and describe the 7 elements of the communication process Explain the skills necessary to send effective messages Identify and explain the four key receiving skills

MaterialsReaching Out Textbook and Looking Out/Looking In TextbookCommunication process handout

Activate

To review from previous classes and scaffold learning so far, draw a KWL chart on the board. Ask students to think about what they have learnt about communication so far. Under “K” have they come up with what they know about communication, “W” what they want to know more about, and “L” what they have learnt.

Introduce Chapter 4. Discuss the 4 things they should know at the end of this lesson from the learning outcomes.

Acquire

Begin showing Ch.4 Powerpoint. After slide 1, have students do a “Think-pair-share” on “what is communication”.

Discuss ways of “Defining communication” refer to pg.126 in the Textbook. Discuss the 7 elements of the communication process. Use the LOLI Ch.1 powerpoint as a visual. Provide students with handouts.

Identify and discuss the necessary skills to send effective messages pg.134-135.

Discuss the four key receiving skills (pg. 150 text). Show video on paraphrasing (ch. 7 video- LOLI). 2minutes.

Apply

Have students complete the Exercise 7.3 Paraphrasing Activity as a class.
