SDS Definition• SDS is a framework for managing a variety of storage systems in the

data center which traditionally are non-unified.

• It gives the ability to manage those storage assets to meet specific Service Level Agreements (SLA).

• Distributed Storage is the dominant architecture in SDS

SDS is how storage is instantiated in Software Defined Infrastructure

SDS Benefits

Flexibility

• Ability to install, configure and deploy rapidly• Allows a “pay-as-you-grow” model• Rapid scaling of new resources -Dynamically scales

both capacity and performance• Automation of previsioning and deployment

Manageability

• Centralized management of heterogeneous storage systems

Multi-vendor support/

integration

• Rich and emerging ecosystem including open source options

• Allows “best of breed” solutions for specific storage tiers/pools

New Business

Models

• Enables IT as a Service models• Enables Rapid Deployment of new apps/services• Enhances the ability to monetize Storage

DECADE

• CPU continues to improve, while disk drive performance remains flat.

• As a result, applications will suffer more and more, unless we rapidly move to FLASH.
