The study of ‘The movement of town centre users in relation to where they park.’
www.walsall.gov.uk
Background
Walsall borough has a large town centre that serves over 250,000 residents. The town centre is experiencing vast urban regeneration which is changing the make up of the centre and therefore influencing changing behaviours of the town centre users.
In the last five years, the town centre has had a new college, a large Tesco’s development, a new Premier Hotel and significant development of apartments as part of the Waterfront development along the Walsall canal. Further development in the town centre includes a flagship Primark store, a new Co-operative store and the possibility of two cinema developments with accompanying restaurants.
We would like to know where vehicle users park their vehicles in relation to what shops they use in the town centre. Do users move their vehicles depending on which part of town they are shopping or do they park in one place to use the whole town centre?

Managing transport as a single system
• The transport network is a single system• Information Management can be the catalyst for
managing it as one• Can’t have a single IM system across “transport”• But Architecture can integrate systems so they become
as one• (But it won’t work without portfolio management)• So everything is actually part of one big business case• Continued research is essential• Some of it will go nowhere• But if we get this right…

Managing transport as a single system
• Don’t close down your options• Invest in Infrastructure
– even when you aren’t sure exactly how it will be used
• Create stepping stones• All predictions are wrong• The business case isn’t what you thought it was• Need to take a few risks• Stick with what you believe
