IBM Messaging and Collaboration: Innovations and Priorities for
Today and Tomorrow

IBMs statements regarding its plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice at IBMs sole discretion. Information regarding potential future products is intended to outline our general product direction and it should not be relied on in making a purchasing decision. The information mentioned regarding potential future products is not a commitment, promise, or legal obligation to deliver any material, code or functionality. Information about potential future products may not be incorporated into any contract. The development, release, and timing of any future features or functionality described for our products remains at our sole discretion

Performance is based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput or performance that any user will experience will vary depending upon many factors, including considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the users job stream, the I/O configuration, the storage configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve results similar to those stated here.

Please note...

Now, many of you know that I love to run. If anyone want to go, I generally start early (I regularly travel with a headlamp) and the only place I haven't been able to run one visit to an emerging market location where the wild dogs were too dangerous for me to risk leaving the hotel. Otherwise, I always run

But my running has evolved....at one point, years ago, I was a sprinter, (well, moreso in swimming but to a degree in running, also)

Later on, I stopped short races, and moved to longer and longer races....10k's, 1/2 marathons, marathons, and over the past five years, ultra marathons.

Recently, I actually returned to sprints again, doing 5ks' and shorter races.

What's the point? That this is the type of flexibility we need in our thinking about software. We need to think long but act now, prepare for and strategically think about an impact that will last 5 years or more...but move lightening fast

So, it's both a sprint and a Marathon when all is said and done. And that combination is possible.

So let's get going

(pic of Usain Bolt)

Life's
WorkRepeatabilitynMain Point:

Essentially work is made of two types of activities. Repeatable and Non (or barely) repeatable. For the repeatable activities the IT industry has done a reasonable job of codifying the steps needed to complete those actions into business process applications

But much of our work today, in fact most of it is not repeatable and, much of this work, the long-tail, it's called, is done with email and spreadsheets.

Well, the world is changing.....sort of.

Email will still be a primary vehicle to communicate both a) actions and b) important information.

However, can we do anything more with the important actions that we receive? And how do you receive actions? a phone call? a Sametime or chat? in a meeting?

Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them.

David Allen

Eric Mack

Main Point: One of the best sellers from a few years ago that I like to remind folks to read is Atul Gawande's "The Checklist Manifesto". It describes how as technology (and medicine, in his case) have advanced, our minds are not able to keep up with the dizzying options of completing our work. We still have to remember what to do next in the non-deterministic activities.

In the world of office productivity, we still try to remember what we owe people and what we asked people to do for us

Biggest selling IBM Press application development book ever!

Domino Designer and Domino 9 build on the success for AppDev in the 8.5.x stream. The fact that we XPages provides a much more extensible runtime framework and Domino Designer an extensible IDE has allowed the IBM development team to deliver new capabilities at a faster pace.

Productivity enhancements like an XPages server-side JavaScript debugger, source editor content assist and the huge infusion of rich web and mobile controls means developers can modernize existing or develop new applications even faster than before.

For 9.0.1, we not only had a sharp focus on quality but also on mobile. Moving up to Dojo 1.8.3, adding new mobile events and other mobile enhancements not only gives developers more capability but sets the stage for future enhancements.

As you know, we have used OpenNTF (our open source community for Domino developers) to get new capabilities into developers hands more quickly than we could through product releases. Merging Social Enabler with Social Business Toolkit SDK means we have one set of assets for developers building social business applications. Twitterbootstrap4xpages helps developers realize value of responsive web design especially for tablets.

Domino Delivers Modern, Mobilized Applications

BEFORE

AFTER

On the left, we see 2 screen shots of Notes and Domino applications from the 90's. These applications provided a lot of business value when first created and at the time, one could consider them visually compelling. Today, those applications deliver a lot of business value but could in no way shape or form be considered visually compelling.

Today, customers demand a modern compelling web user experience. IBM Domino with XPages delivers what users want and in fact expect. Web developers can now build applications that deliver a UI that improves usability and productivity be it on a desktop, tablet or smartphone.

Application modernizationProtect your investment in Notes/Domino

For 2014, our themes built on top of what we are doing today.

We want to build upon some of the foundational work done for XPages mobile in 9.0.1. As mentioned earlier, response web design is becoming the standard approach for building web applications. Since it allows the application to automatically adapt to the form factor, it really does realize the true vision of "build once, run anywhere." I think its safe to say you will see more XPages mobile innovation showing up on OpenNTF in the not too distant future.

As always, we want to improve your return on investment and improving developer productivity certainly does that. We will continue to deliver new features for Domino Designer be they core XPages controls or simplifying how one uses various data sources.

As with the rest of the portfolio, cloud is front and center. Not only are we going to transition Domino from running on SmartCloud Enterprise to Softlayer, we are also looking to improve how Domino applications can be leveraged from our SaaS offerings.

Customers and partners alike are seeing how Domino applications benefit from social capabilities. Be it expertise discovery from someone's profile, spreading knowledge through file sharing or improved task notifications through activity streams, bringing Domino applications together with Connection's empowers users. Our goal is to improve a developers ability to consume social application services and extend the reach of Domino applications into social containers.

And as always, we protect your investment. Giving you ways to modernize applications which have given you 20 + years of value, means you can another 20+ years of returns.

Support for a revolutionary new work experience that delivers peace of mind for employees, allowing them to focus on real work versys an inbox.

Sequoia fixes the problem of trying to do today's job with yesterday's tools.

Sequoia gives me back control of my life. All the stuff that I defer out my inbox throughout the day and process between the hours of 6:00PM and 10:00PM, robs me of my family/private time. Sequoia changes that by helping me stay focused on what's important throughout the day instead of accumulating email debt that has to be paid back at the end of my work day.

The horribly disruptive and overwhelming flow of content that finds its way into my inbox sets the table for me or any professional knowledge worker to become horribly disorganized and terribly inefficient. Sequoia address these problems in at least four ways; Sequoia keeps me from:Being bogged-down with a flood of email

Losing or failing to find important information

Missing critical dates

The dread of being behind at the end of the day

Where email was once arguably the primary communication and collaboration tool for knowledge workers, now it is being challenged and shaped by a world of tweets, text messages, and Pinterests. Professional workers, however, lack the robust tooling and support to recall content or messages needed to do their job. Employees are often exhausted by the continual effort required just to keep up with the scatter and flood of information it takes to be a productive employee and/or leader in today's business world.

IBM customers want a more optimized and responsive email experience for business. Companies have many choices when it comes to email. "IBM mail next" resolves this problem by helping professionals determine where focus needs to be applied; by providing the professional with capabilities to find and take action on virtually anything that lands in the inbox; and by providing choice in a contemporary experience that is optimized for mobile devices and web browsers.
