HVAC Systems Maintain Comfortable Temperatures
and Air Quality Year Round
With summer getting into full swing, temperatures around the country are
approaching, and even exceeding 100 °F. High temperatures generally mean one
thing: air conditioning. Today, more than two-thirds of American homes are
equipped with an air conditioning unit, ranging from central air conditioners to
small window units.
Air conditioning is only one important aspect of HVAC, or heating, ventilation and air conditioning
technology, which focuses on controlling indoor environments. Depending upon time of year, location and
other external environmental factors, HVAC systems can be imperative in assuring that buildings, both
residential and commercial, are maintaining safe and comfortable environments.
Heating
Although there are still a few months before heating systems will be needed again, it is important to think
ahead to properly prepare for the winter months. Indoor heat is generally created within systems such as a heat pump, furnace, boiler or even electricity depending on the type of heat being produced. Generally,
heat is transported in the form of water or air through piping to provide for all of the rooms. Unfortunately,
producing heat also produces undesirable byproducts including carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and
nitrogen oxide. All of these gases are produced when there is a lack of oxygen in the environment and can
have disastrous effects.
Ventilation
To combat these harmful gasses, the next aspect of HVAC focuses on ventilation. In the most basic sense,
proper ventilation means removing the harmful gasses in the air and replenishing oxygen. As mentioned, heating systems often produce dangerous gasses that require proper ventilation in order to avoid human
contact. Another benefit of ventilation is the disbursement of odors, dust, bacteria, as well as heat and air conditioning. Continuous circulation gives these undesirable pollutants more oxygen and overall space to be diluted and become less of a concern.
Within the umbrella of ventilation, two solution categories can be identified. The first one is considered
natural ventilation which can be as simple as opening doors or windows to allow airflow through the building. In some cases, this general airflow is not enough and mechanical ventilation solutions are
required. Generally, these are in the form of fans which can assist in the circulation of air within a room, or
help circulate air between rooms.
Air Conditioning
Air conditioning delivered by HVAC systems is currently the most popular because of the seasonably warm weather. Air conditioning works to lower the temperature in a room or building during warmer weather. In
the case of air conditioning, outside air is passed through a vent where it is converted through a heat
exchanger to produce cold air which is then filtered into the room.
With air conditioning, opening a window to allow for ventilation is not a feasible solution as it would defeat the purpose of cooling the indoor air. To combat this, air conditioning generally uses mechanical
ventilation systems to ensure the environment is kept safe from various pollutants.
HVAC is not only important in residential locations, but commercial and industrial settings as well.
Improper temperatures and ventilation can cause decreased productivity and comfort in office and production settings, and can be detrimental when storing or handling sensitive materials. HVAC studies
are also often performed in an effort to recognize areas of improvement for energy efficiency.
