Giveaway setup with MailChimp
How to arrange a free download for new newsletter subscribers

Newsletter giveaways
• A free giveaway with your email newsletter is a proven way to encourage sign-ups
• This slideshow will show you how to set up a giveaway using the MailChimp software at http://www.mailchimp.com.
• This is the software I use on my site but I have no connection with MailChimp other than as a standard user.

Pre-requirements
• You will need an account set up with MailChimp and a list within that account with your email list.
• You will also need your giveaway prepared – a pdf of useful notes, an MP3 meditation perhaps, but it needs to be ready to go.
• (If you need help with setting up MailChimp I have an e-book available: http://rosemariegant.com/blog/downloads/introduction-mailchimp/)

Step 1: choose your listSign in to your MailChimp Dashboard
From the left hand menu find Lists
If you have several lists, choose the one that you want to be associated with the giveaway.
Click the drop-down arrow way over to the right next to Stats and select Signup forms.

Get to the right form
From the next screen choose General forms
Then click the drop-down arrow beside Signup form and select Final “welcome” email.
(It’s not a bad idea to check the wording on your other forms while you are here.)

Write your email
• Here is where you get to write your welcome email. There will be some standard text there already but you can change that of course.
• Up till now the emails your new subscriber will have received will all have been fairly short and automated. This is your chance to connect with them.

Add your giveaway
When you have your welcome message written, write the link to your download.
“Click here to get the lovely thing I have created for you as thanks for signing up to this list”
Highlight the text (by holding the left mouse button and dragging over it) that you want to be the link to your download and press the link button in the menu bar – shown above.

Attaching your fileNow we are going to actually attach the file.
Rather than the standard “Web Address” we want to attach a link to a file.
Click the drop-down arrow on the right of “Web Address” and choose the “File” option.

Upload your file to MailChimp
Once you have selected “File” as on the previous slide, you will then be taken to your File Manager where all your uploads are.
If your giveaway is a new file you will need to choose Upload, or if you have loaded a copy previously look under the Files tab to find it.

Finally, select it
Once your file has been uploaded successfully you will be able to see it in your File Manager list of files.
Mine looked like this.
Now just click on Select at the bottom and it will create the link back to your welcome message screen.
Make sure you click “update” back on the message screen and you are done!

So where is my giveaway?
• Your precious giveaway file is carefully stored on the MailChimp servers ready to be sent out to new subscribers to the list you chose back at the beginning.

Why isn’t it on my website?
• You can direct people back to your site to get the giveaway there if you wish.
• The advantage to holding it with MailChimp is that people signing up can get the download but if they try to pass the link on others won’t be able to use it unless they are actually signed up to your list. Otherwise they might just pass it around and you would miss subscribers.

I hope this was helpful. More goodies on MailChimp, Wordpress and social media over on http://www.rosemariegant.com plus a nice little mini book on what to check for before you publish a blog post – my free giveaway!
Have a great day.
