DESCRIPTION

Rugged devices withstand harsh environments that would decrease the performance of ordinary consumer devices. Rugged devices are built to be more resistant to dirt, grime, moisture, extreme temperatures, jarring movements, and being dropped. Rugged devices are used in many industries due to their increased reliability and lower overall cost. Many industrial operations have begun to shift towards to consumer devices due to their low initial investment cost and ease of use due to familiarity, but what many do not know is that over the lifetime of that device a much higher cost will be seen. This is typically due to the increased level of downtime due to repairs and lost worker productivity. When a ruggedized device is introduced into operations the initial investment cost is higher, but these devices tend to have a longer product life cycle due to their rugged features and durability - the life cycle of a rugged device is typically twice that of a consumer grade device. The rugged features also account for the decreased down time for repairs. Failure rates on average are typically 3.5 times lower than non – rugged devices. Overall, the total cost of ownership (TCO) of ruggedized devices is 42.6% lower than consumer devices being used in an industrial setting. The industries where rugged devices are seen most often include: supply chain and logistics, warehousing, distribution, manufacturing, field service, construction, architecture, healthcare, retail and courier. Why Select a Rugged Mobile Computer?

Rugged devices withstand harsh environments that would decrease the performance of ordinary consumer devices. Select a rugged device to protect against the effects of:

• Dirt

• Grime

• Moisture

• Extreme heat & cold

• Jarring movements

• Drops

Why Select a Rugged Mobile Computer?

To Ensure Faster Return on Investment (ROI) and Lower TCO Rugged Devices

• Have a longer product lifecycle

• Last twice as long as non-rugged devices (4-6 years)

• Have decreased downtime due to repairs

• Average annual failure rates are 3 ½ times lower than non-

rugged devices

• Can decrease productivity loss

• Lost productivity is responsible for half of average TCO

TCO is on average 42.6% lower than consumer devices when used in enterprise settings

10 Key Features to Look for in a Rugged Mobile Computer

Internal Components

1. Internal components can withstand impact shock (i.e. being dropped or

bumped)

2. Batteries that are specially formulated to work well in cold temperatures

3. Internal heaters – heat the internal components preventing condensation

and associated damage to displays

4. Protective coatings on internal components to protect from moisture

External Components

1. Durable housing that can withstand impact shock

2. Sealed, water resistant housing to prevent condensation

3. Screw in connectors for compatible external devices – ensures a reliable

connection

4. Keys or touch screen displays that can be easily used even when wearing

gloves

5. Display that is visible in many different lighting and temperature

conditions

6. Size and shape should be easy to handle

Device Ruggedness Standards

What standards or certifications exist?

• MIL-STD (U.S. Department of Defense Military Standards)

• MIL-STD 810G: requires the device to remain operable when

landing on any face, edge or corner to a “non-yielding” surface

• IP (Defined by the International Electrotechnical

Commission – IEC) – most widely used certification

• First digit represents particle protection rating, second digit

represents water protection rating

• EX: IP54: level five particle protection – dust deposits may

form but will not affect performance and level four water

protection- can be splashed or exposed to low pressure spray

Device Ruggedness Standards

What standards or certifications exist?

• Temperature Specifications (Cold Rating)

• I-Safe- each environment has specific requirements for

equipment used

• Different classes, groups and divisions

• Drop Specifications

• Concrete is the standard testing surface
