How To Install Magento Theme?

There are two ways to install Magento Theme which are classified into:

1. Install via Magento Connect Manager2. Install Theme Template Folder Manually

The method depends on where the theme is available. If theme is available in Magento connect, install via Magento connect and if not, install theme manually.

- Always take backup of your files before installing theme. No matter if its small or large.

Methods to Install Magento Theme



STEP 1 : Select your favourite theme from Magento Connect and click on INSTALL NOW

STEP 2 : Tick “I Agree to Extension License Agreement and Click on GET EXTENSION KEY Button




STEP 3 : Now click on SELECT KEY so that key will be copied. Here our extension key is: magento-community/magento_absolute_theme_free




STEP 4 : Time to go to your Magento Admin Panel. Login to your Dashboard

And go to System > Magento Connect > Magento Connect Manager from the top menu

Magento Connect will Ask you to Login.




STEP 5 : Now Paste the copied extension key and click to INSTALL button and “Theme successfully installed” message will come once theme is installed.




STEP 6 : Go to System > Configuration from top menu and then from Left menu select DESIGN. From Design select THEMES




STEP 7 : Mention Theme name in Default theme field so that your new theme will be active.

STEP 8 : Now click on SAVE CONFIG button

If your Home Page doesn't come as per the new Theme, disable all the previous home page layouts from the status field.

Now check your home page. It will be as per your new theme!




STEP 1 : Downloaded theme will come in zip file so unzip all files in your local computer

Once you extract files, check /app and /skin folders

Copy entire app folder of your new theme under Your_Magento_Installation/app/design/frontend/default/

Copy entire skin folder of your new theme under Your_Magento_Installation /skin/frontend/default/

Install Magento Theme Manually



STEP 2 : Now login to your Magento admin panel and Go to System > Configuration > Design > Theme same as we followed steps via Magento Connect

Add Theme Name and click on “Save Config”

Note: Name which you will enter in various fields may not be the same. It will be as per your theme. Some theme comes with various colors/design options so field names will be differ.




DONE!

You need to refresh the cache for first time use only.

System > Cache Management OR From Var Folder Manually

Now go to store home and check, your awesome theme is live!




Out of these two methods, Install a theme via Magento Connect is most preferable option.

Reasons are:

- It is easy to install- No technical knowledge required- All files will be installed correctly while in manual installation, if any required file you miss to install, your theme won't work properly and it will be very hard to find errors.
