A general Problem we encounters is system crash. What Is Disk Fragmentation? The main purpose of hard disk in computer system is to store the data. Files, folders etc created by user or system itself get stored on the hard disk. Over the time, when user performs operations (save, change, delete etc) to the files, folders, it causes fragmentation on the storage disk. When user save the modifications made, it results out in storage of bits(files, folders are basically collection of bits, like a human organ is collection of millions of tissues or cells) onto different places of hard disk. But it doesnt make any changes to actual location of file where it appears in windows. The only changes that are invisible bits that make up a file get relocated on hard disk volume. Hence, this whole process creates fragments and results out in slow computer performance, because of increased processing. Why increase in processing due to fragments? The answer is because it took more time to collect data from fragments, as the data of a single file is spread over different chunks, the time needs to collect data and get a single file open increases. How Does Disk Defragmentation Improves Performance

It is really an awesome feel when operating a brand new computer system. When we buy a new

computer or a laptop system, it works smoothly without getting freeze, automatic restart, noise free etc.

As the system become older it starts troubling us. A general Problem we encounters is system crash.

What Is Disk Fragmentation?

The main purpose of hard disk in computer system is to store the data. Files, folders etc created by user

or system itself get stored on the hard disk. Over the time, when user performs operations (save,

change, delete etc) to the files, folders, it causes fragmentation on the storage disk.

When user save the modifications made, it results out in storage of bits(files, folders are basically

collection of bits, like a human organ is collection of millions of tissues or cells) onto different places of

hard disk. But it doesn’t make any changes to actual location of file where it appears in windows. The

only changes that are invisible – bits that make up a file get relocated on hard disk volume. Hence, this

whole process creates fragments and results out in slow computer performance, because of increased

processing.

Why increase in processing due to fragments?

The answer is because it took more time to collect data from fragments, as the data of a single file is

spread over different chunks, the time needs to collect data and get a single file open increases.

The problem caused by disk fragmentation can be understood in terms of “Stability” and “Reliability” of

computer system.

One thing that we need to keep in a note is that, more will be contiguous data over the storage medium,

greater will be the uptime to access data. This is the reason why we should perform Disk

Defragmentation.

How Disk Fragmentation Affects Stability and Reliability of Computer System?

System Hangs and often crashes

Increase in back up time and failure of back up

Increase in data access time, application freeze

Page 2: How does disk defragmentation improves performance

Data loss, accompanied by corruption of file

Failure of hard drive

Cache and RAM problems - Virtual memory failure

Solutions to Problems Caused By Fragmentation

Use of disk defragmentation programs solves the problem.

Increases hard drive longevity

Increases I/O to point where programs earlier ceases

Slow back up problem also get solved. As defragmentation consolidates file back into single

pack, therefore aborted back up and slow back up problem can be easily fixed by Disk

Defragmenter

The defragmenter arranges the files pieces back into the proper structure, hence it prevents

files from being corrupt and any other data loss

A fragmented disk causes operating system to load in high amount of time. With the use of

defragmenter, operating system loads in normal way, hence it also solves boot up issues

Conclusion

Use of disk defragmenter is one of good way to prevent a computer system from being slow down.

Proper care of system and maintenance at regular or specified period of time gives us a long way to use

computer system in an efficient way. Care your machine, make your work easy.
