DESCRIPTION

The roads evolve and essentially degrade under heavy traffic but also under the weather conditions. One has to assert in the last time that a number of roads changes for the worse on, due to fatigue and an important ageing phenomenons. But, with the decrease and insufficiency of credits devoted to maintenance, the collectivities are faced with doing difficult choices in order to keep their road infrastructures in good conditions. Eurovia proposes from now on a technical, environmental and economic solution to keep the service quality expected by the users of the road: Gripseal®.

cold complexThe Gripseal® process was developed in order to respond to an expectation regarding maintenance techniques of surface layers, at the same time rustic and sustainable.

It allows to give back to the surface layer the characteristics to waterproof the road structure allowing then to postpone more important maintenance operations and therefore more expensive.

Effectively, Gripseal® allows, by the association of surface dressing and slurry surfacing, to reinforce the two essential characteristics of a surface layer, waterproofing and skid resistance:

> The continuous binder film ensuring the waterproofing function is thicker than with a dual layer of surface dressing or slurry surfacing,

> The level of skid resistance of the slurry surfacing is reinforced in time by those of the surface dressing thanks to the appearance of the tops of the 6/10 chippings.

Real protection for the road structure, Gripseal® increases its sustainability with a reasonable cost;

it is a long-lasting solution for many years allowing

to wait for more comfortable budgets to carry out

heavy maintenance operations.

Furthermore, a non-negligible characteristic, the

road with its new surface layer appears « as new »

for the users.

Codified for a longtime in Belgium, tested for

several years in Canada, the Gripseal® process

is a technology transfer for Eurovia within the

group. Although it appeared recently in France, the

technique is already handled by specialized teams of

the company.

Gripseal® combines two techniques of cold

applications in the following order:

> a 6/10 single layer surface dressing, with a

chipping mosaic slightly underdosed compared to a

conventional surface dressing,

> Gripfibre®, 0/6mm microsurfacing with fibers,

Each layer is carried out by specialized teams

of the company, with an operating time quite

below traditional asphalt mix layings: the user’s

inconvenience is obviously reduced.

Accepted for more than 10 years for applications under every level of traffic, the originality of Gripfibre® consists in the incorporation in the formula of synthetic fibers with special surface treatment. These fibers eliminate every risk of emulsion running or loose chippings when laying this microsurfacing that is ensured by an automotive mobile equipment that allows transport and storage of the components, their dosing, their mix and their spreading on the road.> The aggregates of Gripfibre® come from hard rock quarries selected by the company for this use. They meet the requirements of the standard EN 13043 relative to aggregates used in hot mixes for surface layers and EN 12273 (slurry surfacing).> The binder of Gripfibre® is Emulvia® Grip P or Emulvia® Grip S, cationic emulsion of modified bitumen with slow and handled breaking. On a road with low traffic, a pure bitumen emulsion is possible as well.> The fibers are synthetic and more than 4mm long. Their dosing leads to reinforce Gripfibre® with several millions of fibers per m2.> The other additives allow to regulate the breaking of the emulsion and to adapt to the jobsite conditions.

The surface dressing

The first layer of Gripseal® consists of an "almost" conventional surface dressing. The emulsion used for the surface dressing is specially designed in order to allow a quick increase of the cohesion; the Gripfibre® can then be laid on the same day if the optimal conditions are met.Concerning the chippings with a grading of 6/10, they present the intrinsic (LA, MDE, PSV) and elaboration characteristics (grading, shape...) compliant to the requirements of the standards NF EN 12271 (surface dressing) and EN 13043.As regards the formula of the surface dressing, it will be adjusted from case to case (support condition, traffic level, weather conditions). However, it is advisable to reduce the dosing of chippings to provide sufficient space on the support so that Gripfibre® can play entirely its role afterwards. The traffic will be limited on the surface dressing while waiting for the second layer (installation of a temporary traffic sign with a speed limit). Eventual loose chippings will be swept before the laying of the Gripfibre®.
