Black cabs go green to fight CO2 Investing in renewable energy schemes offsets cab emissions

One of London's biggest black cab firms is going green by spending £100,000 each year on offsetting its carbon dioxide emissions. Radio Taxis is giving 80% of the cash to overseas renewable energy projects like solar panels in Sir Lanka and a Bulgarian hydro-electric plant. The remaining 20% is set to be spent on forestry projects both across the UK and in Germany. Radio Taxis says it emits almost 24,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. The company says it is also committed to ensuring emissions from its vehicles are as low as possible but admits this is difficult as the majority of its drivers own their own vehicles. 'Business sense' It is also working with manufacturers to create more environmentally friendly cabs and changing to a green electricity supplier for its offices. Andrew Herbert, commercial director of Radio Taxis, which has a fleet of 3,000 black cabs and 80 executive cars, said the aim was to become a "responsible" business. He said: "In the transport sector the challenge is to balance the need to travel with the needs of the environment. "We also believe that facing up to climate change makes business sense. "Our corporate customers are increasingly concerned about sustainability in their supply chain, and our private customers can be assured that this is the most environmentally responsible and safest taxi journey they can take."

Press Release London's Black Cabs Go Green6-8-2007 AM018 One of London’s biggest taxi firms has introduced the option of ‘bio fuels’ for drivers – improving vehicle efficiency and reduced carbon emissions for the capital. This is the first ‘bio-fuel’ designed specifically for taxis and is proven to reduce carbon emissions and increase miles to the gallon.Labour Mayor Ken Livingstone joined Radio Taxis to launch the new green cabs at City Hall and expressed the hope that if the firms efforts prove successful, all cab companies in the capital would be encouraged to do likewise. He said ‘London already has the best taxied service in the world and I am working with the taxi trade to make it the cleanest.’Joanne McCartney, London Assembly Member for Enfield, welcomed the move saying ‘These cleaner greener taxis are a great idea and I hope they will help to make a difference to the air quality in London. Many people are put off using taxis because of pollution fears and this initiative means that we can feel a little better about taking a taxi ride – just look out for the special green stickers on vehicles.‘I think this shows a real move towards more consideration of environmental issues among London businesses which is to be welcomed. It is in all of our interests to reduce London’s carbon footprint and secure the city’s future. Our next task is to ensure that all taxis meet the targets for the Mayor’s Low Emission Zone when it comes in next year’.Notes to EditorsRadio taxis launched the greener vehicles at City Hall with Mayor Ken Livingstone on July 31st 2007.
