The study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems—such as monitors, printers, storage devices, efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on environment.

GREEN COMPUTING

Page 4: Green computing

Core objective of green computing:

1.Minimizing energy consumption

2.Purchasing green energy

3.Reducing the paper and other consumable used

4.Minimizing equipment disposal requirements

WHY GO FOR GREEN COMPUTING ????Today main problem of the world is ”GLOBAL WARMING”.

The atmosphere is becoming hot and causing many problems to living organisms.

Computers also plays a major role in polluting world.

HOW COMPUTING HARM ENVIRONMENT ?Increase in power ,cooling and space for data centre2007-$4.5 BILLION OF ELECTRICITY2011-$7.4 BILLION OF ELECTRICITY2011- DOUBLE CO2 OUTPUT

61 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, at an estimated cost of $4.5B annually.

Various Hazardous materials are present inside computer which indirectly harm human body These are:

A. Cadmium and Sulphur (damage your kidney, lever damage ,heart damage & eye irritation).

B. Mercury (neurological damage, memory loss, muscles weakness).C. Lead (disrupt brain neurotransmitters)

Page 8: Green computing

Four path along which we believes the environmental effects of computing should be addressed: 1. Green Use: Reducing the energy consumption of computers and other information systems as well as using them in an environmentally sound manner

2. Green Disposal: Refurbishing and reusing old computers and recycling unwanted computers and other electronic equipment

Page 9: Green computing

3. Green Design: Designing energy efficient and environmentally sound components, computers, servers and cooling equipments.

4. Green Manufacturing: Manufacturing electronic components, computers and other associated sub systems with minimal impact or no impact on the environment.

Average computer users can employ the following general tactics to make their computing usage more green:

1. Use the sleep mode when away from a computer 2. Use flat-screen or LCD monitors.3. Buy energy efficient notebook computer.4. Activate the power management features5. Make proper arrangements .6. Turn off computers at the end of each day7. Refill printer cartridges, rather than buying new ones8. Instead of purchasing a new computer, try refurbishing an existing device.

TURNING OLD COMPUTER PART TO GREEN : • Glass monitor• Keyboard• CD Rom drive• Plastic case• Cathode ray tube (CRT)• Cables• Copper in power cord• Metal from circuit board• Printer cartridges• Batteries

NEED OF GREEN COMPUTINGIt is observed that most of the data centers don’t have sufficient cooling capacities. This results in environment pollution Another effect is because of toxicity. There are toxic chemicals used in the manufacturing of computers and components which can enter the food chain and water.

“Data centre emit over 150 metric tons of CO2 per year, and the volume is increasing rapidly.

Page 16: Green computing

Many technology companies actually belong several of these to furtherthere goals of becoming more “green”.

Some of these green organizations are:

1. “The Green Grid is a global consortium of IT companies and professionals seeking to improve energy efficiency .The Green Gridinclude AMD, EMC, Intel, APC, HP, Microsoft, Dell, oracle.

2.The U.S. Environmental Agency is a government agency that was created to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment. This agency also created a joint program called Energy Star with the U.S.

“The ENERGY STAR label was established to: Reducegreenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants caused by theinefficient use of energy

Page 17: Green computing
Page 18: Green computing
Page 19: Green computing

1.Reduce energy consumption of computing resources

2. Save energy during idle operation

3.Use eco-friendly sources of energy

4. Reduce harmful effects of computing resources 5. Reduce computing wastes

ADVANTAGES

Page 20: Green computing

1.Green computing could actually be quite costly.

2.Sacrifice performance for battery life.

3.Still in experimental stages.

4. Not for everyone.

DISADVANTAGES

Page 21: Green computing

It has taken upon itself the goal to provide society‘s needs in ways that do not damage or deplete natural resources. Mainly this means creating fully recyclable products, reducing pollution, proposing alternative technologies in various fields, and creating a center of economic activity around technologies that benefit the environment.
