Google is undoubtedly the largest search engine with more than one billion people utilizing the site every month. Now Google has expanded their reach to include Google+, their very own social network with over 90 million users within its first year. With Google+ being in its discovery phase, it can be challenging to understand how to effectively use the platform. However, earlyadopters of the network could be rewarded with strong brand recognition as well as search engine optimization (SEO) benefits. Google+ Benefits There are many unique benefits of Google+, making it a necessity to include it in your marketing strategies. Unlike Facebook, Google+ allows you to aggregate your postings to reach targeted groups. Through "Circles" you are able to categorize and pick which posts are sent to certain groups of followers. This means you can target specific content to specific readers with the click of a button. Another way to directly interact with your followers in realtime is the Google+ “Hangout,” which creates a place to encourage live interaction with your brand. Many organizations have had great success by holding informational sessions through ‘hangingout’ on Google+. In addition, outside the scope of traditional social media resources, Google provides services such as Google Maps and Google Checkout that are slowly being integrated. This will make your Google+ page much more than just a social network, but a representation of your brand that is as strong as your website. Finally, Google+ is unique in that it is directly linked to the largest search engine that controls how much organic visibility your online efforts will receive. In other words, Google+ is in line to become one of the most important contributing factors to your search engine optimization (SEO). In the next section, we explore this connection to SEO and how your efforts on Google+ will compliment your SEO, payperclick (PPC) investments, and social media marketing efforts. March  2012

+  Why  should  your  organization  have  a  presence  on  Google+?

Google  is  undoubtedly  the  largest  search  engine  with  more  than  one  billion  people  utilizing  the  site  every  month.  Now  Google  has  expanded  their  reach  to  include  Google+,  their  very  own  social  network  with  over  90  million  users  within  its  first  year.

With  Google+  being  in  its  discovery  phase,  it  can  be  challenging  to  understand  how  to  effectively  use  the  platform.  However,  early-‐adopters  of  the  network  could  be  rewarded  with  strong  brand  recognition  as  well  as  search  engine  optimization  (SEO)  benefits.

Google+  Benefits

There  are  many  unique  benefits  of  Google+,  making  it  a  necessity  to  include  it  in  your  marketing  strategies.

Unlike  Facebook,  Google+  allows  you  to  aggregate  your  postings  to  reach  targeted  groups.  Through  "Circles"  you  are  able  to  categorize  and  pick  which  posts  are  sent  to  certain  groups

of  followers.    This  means  you  can  target  specific  content  to  specific  readers  with  the  click  of  a  button.

Another  way  to  directly  interact  with  your  followers  in  real-‐time  is  the  Google+  “Hang-‐out,”  which  creates  a  place  to  encourage  live  interaction  with  your  brand.    Many  organizations  have  had  great  success  by  holding  informational  sessions  through  ‘hanging-‐out’  on  Google+.

In  addition,  outside  the  scope  of  traditional  social  media  resources,  Google  provides  services  such  as  Google  Maps  and  Google  Check-‐out  that  are  slowly  being  integrated.

In  the  next  section,  we  explore  this  connection  to  SEO  and  how  your  efforts  on  Google+  will  compliment  your  SEO,  pay-‐per-‐click  (PPC)  investments,  and  social  media  marketing  efforts.

What  is  SEO?  SEO,  or  Search  Engine  Optimization,  involves  improving  the  ranking  or  visibility  of  a  website  in  search  engine  results  pages  (SERPs).

With  good  SEO,  a  website  will  show  up  in  the  “organic”  or  un-‐paid  search  results.  SEO  is  accomplished  through  a  variety  of  methods,  including  keywords,  back-‐links,  and  now  social  media  relevancy.

How  does  Google+  benefit  SEO?  It  was  no  surprise  that  Google  announced  they  would  begin  introducing  social  media  relevancy  to  their  algorithm  with  the  release  of  Google+.  Google+  has  begun  influencing  search  engine  results  pages  (SERPs)  and  SEO  in  a  variety  of  ways.      One  of  the  first  tools  to  be  adopted  was  the  +1  button.  Rand  Fishkin  of  SEOmoz  explains  it  as  Google’s  way  to  “learn  more  about  what  people  enjoy,  support,  and  want  to  share.”  The  more  and  more  something  is  +1’ed,  the  more  social  credibility  it  receives.  Therefore,  our  first  recommendation  is  to  insert  +1  buttons  throughout  your  website  and  promote  quality

content  not  only    across  Google+  but  all  social  networks.

The  second  way  Google+  influences  SEO  is  the  advent  of  indexing  Google+  Business  Pages.  Meaning  that  over  time,  if  your  Google+  page  is  optimized  correctly,  you  could  begin  ranking  in  two  spots  on  page  one  of  SERPs,  taking  key  real  estate  away  from  your  competition.  GoMedia  recommends  that  you  not  only  get  on  Google+,  but  commit  to  a  strategy  and  manage  your  Google+  page  with  as  much  attention  as  you  would  give  your  website.    With  the  platform  in  its  infancy,  it  is  hard  to  gauge  where  it  will  go  next.  These  are  just  two  ways  it  has  already  begun  to  influence  SEO.  However,  with  the  main  Google  brand  supporting  its  success,  it  is  safe  to  say  it  will  become  a  cornerstone  in  online  marketing.  It  will  also  continually  affect  the  world  of  SEO;  a  world  that  was  once  dominated  by  programmers  and  coding,  that  is  now  being  surpassed  by  likes,  tweets,  and  +1’s.      With  the  SEO  benefits  as  motivation,  a  Google+  Business  Page  is  becoming  a  critical  component  to  any  online  marketing  strategy.
