Habitat

• The panda first appeared 2 to 3 million years ago. Originally, panda territory included South and East China and parts of Myanmar and Northern Vietnam. Fossil evidence shows that pandas lived almost as far north as Beijing.

• pandas are found in six isolated forest areas in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi provinces in China.

Human Interaction

• Today the principal cause of its decline is the erosion of its habitat due to crop cultivation or from natural cause such as die-black of bamboo.

• As its natural habitat becomes increasingly surrounded by human settlement to panda can no longer migrate to unaffected area.

Social Structure

• Adult giant pandas are generally solitary, but they do communicate periodically through scent marks, calls, and occasional meetings. Offspring stay with their mothers from one and a half to three years.

• The giant panda has lived in bamboo forests for several million years. It is a highly specialized animal, with unique adaptations.

Reproduction

• Gestation: 5 months.• Breeding season: Not known, but thought to

be April.• Gestation is five months long, and 1-2 young are

born (although only one is ever raised). The young are 3.2-4.6 oz (90-130 g) in weight and 5.9-6.6 in (15-

17 cm) long at birth and are blind and helpless.
