A key challenge faced by every company in the tele-communications industry is how to monetize the rate of change in the way people communicate. In the past, communication was a real-time conversation in which people privately shared information. With the explosion of Social Networking, communication today also includes asynchronous threaded exchanges using a range of methods like voice, video, text message, posts, and sharing of information with groups of people. Communication has been predominately via a fixed or landline telephone, however today many people use mobile phones, comput-ers, tablets, and even TV set top boxes while the range of devices continues to expand. These changes are real, growing, and pro-moted from an applications industry that lives outside of the world of telecommunications service providers.

The ability of the service provider to participate actively in these new communications methods requires a bridge – a capability that can enable interaction between significantly different environments: the telecommunications, TV and broadband access networks, and the free and open Internet.

The GENBAND Web Application Manager (WAM) allows a ser-vice provider to embrace these changes by facilitating the creation of new communications services and leveraging the infrastructure and services of the service provider network. 3 CLASSES OF APPLICATIONS:As a software solution, the GENBAND Web Application Manager enables a wide range of applications to reach beyond session-based communications to the Internet without the heavyweight re-quirements of a service delivery platform. The WAM provides a bridge between the secure and monetizable realm of the service provider communications network and the wide-open world of the web. The GENBAND Web Application Manager (WAM) provides 3 classes of applications:

1—APPLICATIONS THAT EXPOSE THE SERVICE PROVIDER NETWORK (API PUBLICATION):These capabilities expose the value in the operator’s network to enable rapid application development. GENBAND opens the capa-bilities of the service provider network to external applications using RESTful APIs. RESTful APIs are simple web services implemented using standard HTTP, making it simpler to develop and understand.

2—APPLICATIONS THAT ENRICH SERVICE PROVIDER NETWORKS (API CONSUMPTION): Communications value is created by exposing the service provider’s network capabilities, but even more value is available by allowing the developers of Internet applications to tap into a service provider’s network to add more features to their Internet-based applications using the service provider’s network. This way service providers can monetize their networks through 3rd parties’ use of their network.

3—APPLICATIONS THAT EXTEND THE SERVICE PROVIDER’S SERVICES QUICKLY TO NEW DOMAINS:The GENBAND WAM provides a platform that is appropriate for the creation of “non-telephony” communication applications. The WAM enables GENBAND and the service provider to develop enhanced applications that are suitable for delivery to all carrier subscribers across different devices.

WEB APPLICATIONS MANAGER - VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS SUITEThe Visual Communications Suite (VCS) is designed to treat the IPTV, MSO or Cable Video Distribution Network as an ‘Over the Top’ IP network, and use that network to deliver comprehensive commu-nications control capabilities to the Set Top Box user. Some of the capabilities are:• Calling name and number display• Configurable settings for notifications• Call Logs• Message Waiting Indication (MWI)• Send call to voicemail• Send call to any number • Click-to-call from voicemail or call logs• Personal address book and friends list • Visual voicemail • Presence monitoring and publication

The VCS application can also extend these capabilities to other endpoints such as tablets, Smartphones and Personal Computers. The subscriber can thereby interact with and control communications using a range of devices, while GENBAND coordinates the interac-tions.

WEB APPLICATIONS MANAGER - FLEXIBLE CLIENT SUITE The Flexible Client Suite (FCS) application provides APIs and capabilities that significantly improve the ease of building end user applications and clients leveraging and embedding communications capabilities from the service provider’s network. The combination of a comprehensive RESTful API with a JavaScript Library permits the op-erator to build customized clients and web portals providing unique communications and communications integration value. Some of the capabilities of the Flexible Client Suite include:• Identity, association (user/user, user/network), address(es) • Authentication and multiple authentication types• Notification framework (generic, and custom)• User data access• Call event management

* Incoming call* Incoming call disposition * Make call * IMRN make call

• Call logs

• Address book(s) • Personal information (picture, addresses, etc.)• Route list• Messaging: (send and receive, multiple types)• Presence (publish, subscribe, fetch, permit, deny) • Message waiting Examples of applications that could be enabled by the FCS include light-weight PC/tablet phone clients, web clients to replace down-loaded VoIP applications, and widgets for Yahoo/Google Talk/Twitter/etc.

SUMMARYThe Internet is the most important Service Delivery Platform avail-able today. It hosts the most important development community and the most compelling development technologies. The GENBAND WAM combines the Internet application environment with the service provider network and service provider’s user-community thereby unlocking new revenue streams.
