ENGAGING LIVING LABS: WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

“I feel the European Network of Living Labs is becoming a

birthplace for sustainable cities. The living labs are proving to

be the ideal way to bring citizens, government and businesses

together for co-innovation. Living labs give both governments

and citizens a way to explore various options to sustainable

city initiatives and helps free them from limited choices

provided by the big IT vendors. City officials face overwhelming

options in selecting new technologies, and a living lab offers them

a way to gain insights through vendor-neutral research.”

Pieter Ballon, IBBT / i.Lab.o

ENGAGING LIVING LABS: THE PROCESS

• The Stakeholder Workstream (SEWS) facilitates FI-PPP projects’

engagement with the Living Lab community through a 2-step

process:

• Supporting the analysis and selection of Living Labs (and related

stakeholder ecosystems) throughout Europe (and abroad) that will

prove valuable stakeholders due to their:

• STAKEHOLDER STRUCTURE

• INFRASTRUCTURE

• APPLICATION DOMAIN

• PREVIOUS FUTURE INTERNET EXPERIENCE(S)

• Providing the necessary mechanisms and instruments (e.g. common

workspaces, wikis; matching events; etc.) to interlink these selected

Living Lab communities with the FI-PPP projects

Page 8: Future Internet SME engagement and Living Labs

ENGAGING LIVING LABS: THE ADDED VALUE

• Engagement from a double perspective:

• the living labs creating new products and services

based on the project outcomes (i.e. exploitation of the

FI-PPP results); and,

• the FI-PPP projects using the services provided

through the Living Labs (i.e. real-life experimentation

facilities for testing purposes; co-designing services;

etc.).

SMEs ARE THE SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE INTERNET GROWTH

“Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) represent a critical

component of the EU economy.” (p.99)

“SMEs accounted for 33% of the Internet market value in 2010,

corresponding to 57 B€, expected to grow to 72 B€ in 2014.” (p. 83)

RAND Europe, et al. (2011). FI3P – Study in Support of a Future Internet Public-Private Partnership.

The European Internet Industry and Market [Deliverable 2].

“In fact, 99% of European companies are SMEs, …

but very few are frequently participating in research activities

and benefiting from R&D results.” (p. 6)

MaPEeR SME. (2011). Measures to foster SMEs’ participation in R&D&I activities and synergies’

promotion in support of innovation and SMEs.

SMEs ARE THE SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE INTERNET GROWTH

“Implement good practices based on Open Innovation,

facilitating the adoption of open innovation practices to foster

better inter-firm collaboration (i.e. SME-SME and SME-Large

firms to create new business models). Accept, encourage and

facilitate co-operation among firms including their suppliers,

customers and stakeholders recognizing also that SME play

double function: as outsourced firms to carry out research

(Subcontracted specialized research entities) and also as

users of R&D results instead of being sources of R&D.”

MaPEeR SME. (2011). Measures to foster SMEs’ participation in R&D&I activities and synergies’

promotion in support of innovation and SMEs. p. 7.
