Metaphors and Similes(With me, Mrs. Cannon)

Similes and metaphors describe something by comparing it to something else.

Similes always use like or as.

Metaphors say that something is something else.

For example

Lets compare these windows to Jolly Ranchers.

Yes, that is me.

5

Are the windows actually Jolly Ranchers? No.

6

If they were, we would not be comparing two different things.

7

A simile: The windows are like Jolly Ranchers.

8

A metaphor: The windows are Jolly Ranchers.

9

Another simile: The windows are as colorful as Jolly Ranchers.

10

We could compare the windows to other things too.

11

The windows are like colored tissue paper.(Simile)

12

The windows are made of rainbows.(Metaphor)

13
