The Creative Brief
1. Update the Gloucestershire Young Carers web presence using social media, wordpress etc.
2. Create a policy and set of guidelines around these projects so that everything you do protects young people
What we’ve done - overview
1. Unified website built in Wordpress that encompasses the young carers voice and more corporate angle including funding
2. ‘GYC*’ forum integrated in the site for use by young carers to chat and share their experiences, tips and details of when to meet up
3. ‘GYC* blog’ in Tumblr for young carers to document their experiences and the activities they do with Gloucestershire Young Carers which will feed into the homepage
4. New working logo and colour palette
5. Presentation to charity trustees to get buy-in for use of social media
6. New email templates for newsletters for potential donors and carers
*Note: we are using ‘GYC’ for youth-led content, i.e. blog and forum and Gloucestershire Young Carers for the rest of the website
1. Wordpress website build
Wordpress is designed to be as simple as is possible, by using wordpress you will be able to easily manage, edit & amend all of your online content. Wordpress is a powerful tool for creating and maintaining websites. The Gloucestershire Young Carers website has been created by team of developers. These instructions are intended to show how to add and edit pages and posts. More detailed help can be found at http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Lessons It is not expected that GYC will make changes to the configuration of the website – only content changes.

Log-in. By visiting http://gyc.inthecompanyofus.net/wp-login.php you’ll see:
Enter in your log-in details. (currently: Username: Admin password: r1ftz0ne ) This will bring up the dashboard, this provides a quick overview of everything that’s been happening on your site:

To add or edit pages click on pages.
Click on the relevant page to edit one otherwise click on `Add New` to add a new page. Hierachy of the pages are shown in this view. As you can see “–Individuals Support” is a sub page of “Support our carers”.
Enter the title of the page and the content and when ready click on publish. To make a page a subpage select the appropriate Page from the drop-down menu. If you specify a Parent other than "Main Page (no parent)" from the list, the Page you are now editing will be made a Child of that selected Page. When your Pages are listed, the Child Page will be nested under the Parent Page. The Permalinks of your Pages will also reflect this Page hierarchy.

CategoriesForum set up so that non users can see some content – recommended to ensure that non users see some of the information. Public content allows some information sharing to those carers who are not willing/able to register.General – allows guests to view and users to postSocial - no read access to guests but users can read and post
More can be set upDecision to be made on security settings depending on risk appetite of GYC – site could be tied down so only registered users can read and post.Moderation – all content posted can be seen as and when it is posted. Posters can change their postings only for the 1st 5 minutes. This allows the corrections of mistakes but also allows abuses to remain in place so they can be picked up by the moderatorWe have set this up to be self policing - users should report misuse for moderator to take action. May be requirement for authorisation of posting but this can slow down the responses.
2. GYC Forum
GuideUsers will need an e-mail address to access the forum which are not displayed. Most people these days have e-mail accounts. If an account is needed then there are providers such as Hotmail and gmail that will provide a mail account that can be accessed with a web browser and these accounts are free.
Default behaviour of the site is for the discussion groups at the top to be the ones with the most recent activity. To fix discussion to the top you can make it an announcement. This is what we have done to the welcome posting so that it is always at the top and will be seen by all users.Admins can delete or amend comments or postings.Should people forget their password then there is a facility to request a reminder. System will then send out a link to the e-mail that is registered to the user and the link will allow them to reset the password.
3. GYC blog
• Written by young carers only – their ‘voice’
• Encourage young people to make a habit of documenting anything they do with charity, i.e. outings, gatherings, articles they’ve written, interesting photos/blogs/articles and anything they are passionate about, eg. Going to university, music etc. Perhaps 4 that attended GFN could take ownership of it. Great tool for recruiting new young carers and engaging corporates.
• Four latest blog posts will automatically feed into homepage (thumbnail image with title of post)
• Could post directly on facebook page and Twitter
• Built in Tumblr because it is a very simple platform to upload photos, videos, articles, links, it is free and easy to customise.
3. GYC blog – how to guide
Log in details – www.tumblr.comUsername: [email protected]: young(There is only one username and password, so young carers can simply sign their name at the bottom of the post so people know who it’s by)
To upload a text post with an image:Click on ‘Text’, then start writing your blog post with a title. You can add a photo by clicking on ‘upload a photo’. Then just click ‘create post’ on the bottom left. Voila!
You can also simply upload a photo or video-based post and write a short description of it, by clicking on ‘Photo’ or ‘Video’
