20% above 2.000 m 10% below 500 m 65% forest

• Inhabitants: ~ 530.000• 217 Municipalities; 5 with > 10.000 residents • Different cultures integrated:

o Several linguistic minority groups o Urban, rural and mountain areas

• 90% of local taxes are retained • Per-capita GDP: 30.700 Euro (2011) • Public investment in R&D: 1,2% of GDP
