What is an Ideal Urban What is an Ideal Urban Village?Village?

An urban village is an urban planning and urban design concept.  Urban villages are compact, walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods and towns that are a pleasure to live in.  Also known as new urbanism towns and villages, these places are becoming more popular as people have had enough of suburban traffic jams, and the lack of good urbanism.  Urban villages are places where everything you need is within walking distance (shops, restaurants, movies, services). In an urban village you can live without a car, since the compact layout makes it easy to get around on foot, bicycle, or by trains & light rail.  These compact villages are a drastic contrast to our sprawling suburbs where everything is spread out, separated by uses, and connected only by roads and highways. Life in an Urban Village is completely different from big cities and suburbs in that they are pedestrian oriented, and offer a higher quality of life being friendlier and a more pleasant place to live in.

Page 5: Extracurricular1 model urban village

Theses villages are known as urban villages because they house the transitory population. The transitory population are the migrant people mainly living in small rooms for rent. In reality, urban villages are the villages that comprise the migrant population and are a little better off than other villages in the sense that they have facilities such as schools, hospitals etc.

Programs such as afforestation and terracing have started being practiced so as to reduce soil

erosion in the area.

Canals have been built to retain rainwater

The Ralegan Siddhi example, now 25 years old, by demonstrating that it is possible to rebuild natural capital in partnership with the local

economy, is a model for the rest of the country.
