Virtual Machines
So how does ShadowProtect5 differ from SPX?
Official StorageCraft SPXSupported Windows Operating Systems
Official StorageCraft SPXSupported Linux Versions
Linux
ShadowProtect5 generates files in a specific format (*.spf, *.spi)
log files
So our eFolder agent can monitor backup health (regardless of edition)
SPX generates files in the same format as other editions of ShadowProtect (*.spf, *.spi)
ImageManager running on the BDR works with both the Linux and Windows versions of SPX.
are used to monitor the health of ShadowProtect5 data by the eFolder backup manager agent.
• Can monitor both SP V5 and SPX• Uses a Linux operating system (Ubuntu)• Can run in a Virtualbox VM on the BDR
ShadowControl Appliance:
Currently Known SPX Support Issues?
RECOMMENDATIONS:
• Continue to recommend, use, deploy and support ShadowProtect version 5.x, until identified SPX limitations are eliminated.
• Advise against moving to SPX until issues found in testing have been addressed
• Support SPX if it is installed, within
the limitations of the new application.
• SPX upgrades retain current MSP keys
• MSP licenses for SP5 work with SPX
The new SPX management
console is completely
different from SP, with limited functionality.
For example, the SPX console can’t monitor
multiple agents
ImageReady has been
removed as part of the
SPX installation
A newer, upgraded version of
Virtualbox is required for
SPX
SPX will migrate files
and job parameters,
but there is NO rollback to the
previous version.
There are NO backup logs or log directories identified
in SPX
Backups with hidden and unknown
partitions will not migrate
these partitions.
ShadowControl requires the partner to install their
own appliance and expose it
on the Internet
Virtualizing a Linux backup on
a Windows machine is not possible due to
limitations in the Virtualboot Virtualbox
addins.
SPX does not support mounting a backup file that is deduped, mounting a
backup file that is dependent on another backup file that is deduped or
restoring a backup file hosted on a dedup-enabled volume using Recovery Environment if any of the backup files
have been deduped
What is eFolder’s current level of support for SPX?
For partners with Linux servers:
1. Install SPX on the Linux servers.
2. MSP license keys will activate SPX .
3. Backup ShadowProtect data to the BDR with the Linux agent.
4. Windows ImageManager will consolidate Linux *.spf files.
5. Install SPX console on a *different* computer than the Windows BDR.
6. Use console to connect to the Linux SPX agent.
