SMART HOME The aim of technology is to provide comfortable

living Many companies are working individually to

achieve their version of a smart home. E.g. OOMI, Nest, Samsung SmartThings, etc

SMART RETAIL

IoT in retail focus on following areas: (1) Supply chain management, (2) Inventory and warehouse management, (3) Marketing, (4) In-store experience.

Can be achieved through sensors on products, automated shelves, consumable goods monitoring, fleet assignment tracking, automated store lighting, tailored marketing by proximity-based consumer interaction in the corridor, fraud and counterfeiting controls, automatic checkouts through mobile phones, automated vending machines, connected homes, etc.

SMART HEALTH

IoT technologies can be implemented to improve the assisted living conditions, help people with disabilities and monitor conditions like body temperature, breathing rate, blood pressure, pulse rate, blood sugar, etc.

Information can be collected locally through wearable or ambient sensors. This information can be transmitted to remote medical centers which can monitor the conditions and provide a response when needed

E.g. telemedicine, Home Health Hub Internet of Things (H3IoT), WICED (Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices) etc.

Wearable sensors can also be used to monitor daily activities to provide personalized health care solutions for better lifestyle and prevention of health problems

SMART ENVIRONMENT Environment monitoring system using IoT to predict natural

calamities, collect information on temperature, humidity, light, wind, rainfall, etc.

Allows access to remote areas where human presence might not be feasible. e.g. Fire Detection, Radiation sensors, etc.

IoT can also be implemented for tracking and monitoring of waste sources, transport vehicles, waste disposal sites, etc.

SMART TRANSPORTATION

Smart Roads: Re-define parking lines, road lanes, give warning signs keep roads ice free, detours around traffic congestion, carry data lines eliminating dead spots and need for cell towers.

Internet of Vehicles: dynamic mobile communication systems that communicate between vehicles and public networks

Parking Management System: city of Santander in Spain, city of Pisa in Italy

Page 12: Emerging Applications Perspective for Internet of Things

1. Sensors "detect" whether a parking space is occupied or vacant2. This data is transmitted to central server3. Smartphone app "requests" a parking space and guides drivers to the free space4. Parking fee is paid directly through the mobile app5. Special permits are required (such as local resident ID) for parking in residential areas, or special permits for taxis, deliveries6. Legitimation: access control to restricted traffic areas such as private

institutional parking, loading zones

SMART LOGISTICS IoT can benefit freight transportation, value chains,

warehouse operations, and last mile delivery Analyzes the generated data to create insights Unlocks higher levels of operational efficiency e.g. Postybell: mailbox sensor - connecting the logistics

provider with the end recipient

SMART INDUSTRY[ INDUSTRIAL INTERNET OF THINGS

(IIoT) ]

Monitoring - chemical in tanks, indoor air quality, temperature, ozone presence (in food factories), equipment wear and tear etc. - all leading to improvement in equipment lifespan

Aims at bosting revenue by enhancing operational efficiency through smart devices

Real-time monitoring of the factory performance data (energy consumption, inventory status, material flow)

Page 15: Emerging Applications Perspective for Internet of Things

PRECISION AGRICULTURE

Monitoring of soil and plant physicochemical parameters through sensors

Obtaining data in real time – images, environmental conditions Automating field management by incorporating a Decision

Support System (DSS)

CHALLENGES IN ADOPTION OF IOT Interoperability of Technologies: different manufacturers, different

technologies Bulk Data: generating valuable information in timely and relevant way Protection of Information: greater possibility of unauthorized use &

criminal attacks Universal Implementation of IPv6: to meet the addressing

requirements Low-profit margin and acceptance rate: difficulty in

understanding sophisticated tech hampers investment in

innovation and easy acceptance

TRENDS IN IoT The applications of IoT are spread over a variety of sectors

affecting different groups of individuals.

Individual challenges in applications do exist which revolve around bottlenecks such as ubiquitous Internet access, requisite apps/OS in devices, Bluetooth & location services always enabled, loyal customer base, and allocation of funds by the government for upgrading infrastructure.

Apart from eliminating these bottlenecks, the main challenge lies in developing a common platform which integrates all sectors of applications along with providing the necessary solitariness.

To conclude, a comparative analysis of emerging applications in the field of IoT as per the worldwide Google web search trends is shown in figure 2. The number against each item indicates its average popularity which is calculated by taking the average of interest over the period - February 2015 to January 2016.
