A podcast is a digital

media file or collection

of files that is distributed

over the internet. The

files can then be played

back on a computer or

personal player, such as

an Ipod. The method by

which podcasts are

distributed is often

called podcasting.

Podcasting began to catch hold with the public in late 2004, though during the 1998–2001 dot-com era there were multiple "podcasts" done by major companies, such as Real Networks and ESPN.com

Many individuals and groups contributed to the emergence and popularity of podcasts.

There are three kinds of

podcasts.

• Audio podcasts also known as a

MP3 are the most common types of

podcasts. Enhanced podcasts can

have images to go along with the

audio.

•Enhanced podcasts are an AAC

file and are not supported by all

devices.

•Video podcasts are movies,

complete with sound. Video podcasts

can be in a variety of formats, but

MPEG-4 is the most popular.

Podcasts has many educational benefits•Students are able to

create a product to share with a potentially world-

wide audience. •Knowing that there is a

real-world audience gives students purpose and motivation to create a spectacular product. •It is interactive and a

creative way of learning•Improves speaking and

listening skills•Meets the different

learning styles of each student

Allows teachers to provide additional instructions to students and involve them in the interaction.

It is especially useful for the students with learning difficulties.

Powerful new instructional tool It enables teachers to reach students through a

medium that is both “cool” and part of their lives. Podcasting has the capacity of advancing a

student’s education beyond the classroom. It attracts a global audience quickly.

Advantages Flexible Learning Opportunities: can listen & watch any time. Do not have to use computer for playback. Greatly increases access to classes, lectures, and talks by making

these available for download to people who cannot attend the session in person.

It is very valuable for students to use as a review or a study guide.

Disadvantages Large file size which requires broadband connection and it makes

it harder to download if the connection is slow. Users must make sure that all files are MP3 format and not just for

I pods. Transcripts must be made of files to ensure accessibility. (Timely

& Costly)

Remember, you don't need an iPod or handheld to be a part of podcasting–you can listen right from your web browser. Whatever personal device you may use to listen to podcasts, learning is certainly in hand!
