What is a Sub Domain?

• A sub domain is simply a subsection of your website existing as a sub directory in your public_html (document_root) directory.

• It’s much like an independent website with its own unique content but with no new domain name, since it references the primary domain.

Sub Domain Structure• A prefix is used in conjunction with your existing domain

name (primary domain) to create a sub domain. No need to register a new domain – Saves you some cost.

• A typical sub domain would have the following structure: prefix.mydomain.com. Prefix here, is your preferred sub domain name, while mydomain.com is your existing domain, what we refer to as the primary domain.

Example

• For instance, you may create a sub domain like, store.mydomain.com where you run an online store or help.mydomain.com where you offer support to your site visitors.

• These sub domains form unique websites with unique content. It’s only evident association with the primary domain is that it prefixes it.

• A folder for the subdomain is automatically created in your public_html directory, once you click create.
