If you run your own website, chances are you know how to build backlinks or at least know where you can get some. Building backlinks is an essential piece of every SEO strategy, but there are many differing opinions on how to accomplish this.

Backlinks are just links from a website that point back to yours. They can point to your homepage, or any other page or article on your website. There are a couple of main reasons why you'd want sites linking to yours.

From a pure marketing standpoint, they're used to get people to visit your site. Normally they're placed in articles that are relevant to your websites niche. While someone is reading the article, the hopes are they'll click the link and end up visiting your website.

When you build backlinks from an SEO standpoint, they're used in a completely different way. Search engines use them to gauge the popularity of your website and determine where you site will be placed in search engine results pages (SERP).

Both of these ways have some common dos and don'ts, with the main commonality being it should look very natural. Search engines frown upon you buying backlinks for the purpose of improving you SERP, but the fact is, everyone does it. They may not admit it, but they do it, and if they tell you otherwise, they're lying.

It’s the only way to compete in some markets, but it’s extremely important to make it look as natural as possible. Getting caught by Google buying backlinks is a surefire way to end up on their banned list. If that happens, adios amigo!

If you don't know what you're doing when you build backlinks, you can seriously damage your website's reputation and possibly even get blacklisted by search engines from appearing in results pages. You should avoid the following mistakes to ensure this doesn't happen to your website.

•Do not go for quantity over quality. Quality backlinks will get you ranked higher than sheer quantity. 10 backlinks from high page ranking, quality websites will get you ranked much higher than 100 backlinks from low quality sites.

•Do not build backlinks from every website you visit. You only want links from relevant websites pointing back to yours. If you run a cooking website, you wouldn't want to get a bunch of links from sports websites, as it likely has nothing to do with the content on your site.

• Do not create just 1 type of backlink. Backlinks come in many types, including forum links, profile links, social bookmarking links, web 2.0 links, press releases, blog comments, etc. Your backlink portfolio should include as many types as possible.

• Do not build backlinks sporadically. Stick to a schedule and try to create around the same number of links week to week, month to month. It will not look natural if you build 5,000 links in one week and then nothing for the next 3 weeks. Instead, try creating 1,250 a week over the course of a month. (These numbers are for illustrative purposes only, and should not be taken as a guideline, cause that’s a crap load of links! Just be consistent in whatever number you choose. Also, no animals were harmed during the writing of this post, however, some electrons may have been violated…)

•Do not use the same anchor text for all your links. Vary your anchor text by using phrases like click here, read more or check this out. Also, you can use your URL as well. I'd say use your keyword anchor text no more than 60% of the time, mixing in other words and your URL the remaining 40%.

Some of these things are not completely in your control. You can't do much about someone linking to your website from theirs, even if it has nothing to do with your content. You also will not be able to control some low quality sites linking to yours from theirs.

But, you can control the backlinks you buy, uh, I mean build, yourself. ;) Just be careful who you're buying them from and make sure they know what they're doing before you let them build backlinks for you.http://chooseyoursalary.ne
