Presentation TopicToo Big to know?
Rethinking knowledge in a web society.
What is knowledge?
Representation of world Build up piece by piece Using facts & logic Nail down the pieces Certainly settled
Physical manifestation of knowledge
Encyclopedia.Newspapers JournalsLibraries.
Anything else We forget?- - -> The Experts
The Serious problems
Books don’t fit to the library.Unable to cover all the topics.Focused on readers desire.Highly filtered.Inks are settled.
INTERNET, It’s infinite. In one word, more & more space than the printed system.
Characteristics of internet
Too much informationMessyUnsettledUnstructured
Traditional Knowledge: 1. Bounded 3. Orderly 2. Settled 4. Step by step
Information overload
“Alvin Toffler”, “Future Shock” in 1970. Distraction & unmanageable information Like: Email, Spam, notification etc.
“ There is no such thing as information overload, just filter failure” ..... Clay Shirky
Filtering
Traditional filtering:Remove books from the libraries.Internet filtering:No way to filter only useful information on web. Example : Blog
Inclusion method? what this called? “Filter forward rather than Filtering out.”
Messiness is BAD?
Messines is how you scale importance. We will find millions of meaningful ideas that
contradict ideas.
Unsettled
For every fact on the internet there is an equal and opposite fact.
We never agree anything.
What to do?
Real Life Example
This is where knowledge lives. Paper based system isn’t fast enough to scale knowledge.
Ideas of Smart Room (As Medium of Knowledge)
Traditional knowledge mediumExpensive books, Limited library shelfInappropriate maintenance of collectionsLimited capability of Human brain
Link mediumUnlimited capability
Change the way of thought
Ideas of Smart Room
Smart is not the one who knows the mostbut
the room (networks) where people know together.
What about New Cultural Project(In a web Society)
Need to make a smart roomWhere people will work as volunteerLinks will be developedLinks will express interest & create contactsKnowledge will expand one network to otherFree access will make contradiction Disagreement and diversity will make the room
more rich.
Finally
“Networked knowledge may or may not be trueer about the world, but it is trueer about knowing.”
Finally
“What we have in common isn’t one knowledge about which we agree, but a shared world about which we disagree.”
