Introduction
A digital library is an integrated set of services for capturing, cataloguing, storing, searching, protecting, and retrieving information, which provide coherent organization and convenient access to typically large amounts of digital information.
A consolidated definition by different authorities:
Digital Libraries are systems that combine machinery of the digital computing , storage & communication, the content, the software needed to reproduce, emulate and extend the services of collecting, cataloguing, finding & disseminating information offered by traditional libraries.
A digital library can have multi-tier architecture. Different digital libraries follow different architectures and models. Here we discuss the basic concepts and principles involved in its design and architecture.
CRITERIA FOR DIGITAL LIBRARY:
To develop a digital library system, the following criteria can be considered:1. Low cost, including all hardware and software components2. Technically simple to install and manage3. Robust4. Scalable5. Open and inter-operable6. Modular7. User Friendly8. Multi-user (including both searching and maintenance);9. Multimedia digital object enabled10. Platform independent (including both client and server components).
Principles For Digital Library Design
The following principles guide the development of the architecture.
a. Service drivenb. Open architecturec. Scalabilityd. Preservatione. Privacyf. Practicalityg. Modularityh. Time framei. Client support

A Generic Architecture For A Digital Library System:
A Digital Library System may consist of four layers
1. A Database Management System (DBMS)2. Digital Objects Server3. Digital Library Middleware4. Digital Library Clients

Models of Digital Library
Digital Library Reference Model
Streams Text, Video, Audio, Image Describes properties of the DL Content such as
Structures Collection, Catalog, hypertext, Document, Metadata
Specifies Organizational aspect of the DL Content
Spaces Measures, measurable, topological, Vector, Probabilistic
Define logical and Presentational views of several DL Components
Scenarios Searching, Browsing, Recommending

Digital Library: Myths
Myth 1: The Internet is the Digital Library.
Myth 2: The myth of a single digital library or one-window view of digital library collections.
Myth 3: Digital libraries will provide more equitable access, anywhere, any time.
Myth 4: Digital libraries will be cheaper than print libraries.
