Opened to patients in 2014, Fiona Stanley Hospital, near Perth, is one of the country’s most advanced public healthcare facilities. Steeped in high-tech solutions, it’s the biggest construction project ever undertaken by the Government of Western Australia.

The deep knowledge and experience of BT and international services specialist Serco was drawn upon to bring this bold vision to life. On hand at every step – from design and build to managed services – the BT Serco partnership is helping unleash innovative services for patients, clinicians, administrators and visitors.

More than anything, between BT and Serco we understand our role in supporting the hospital, especially in how it underpins patient-centric care for the clinicians.

Unified BT network supports 25 hospital non-clinical services including robotic ward deliveries and multi-purpose digital platforms.

Starting a fresh page in the digital design manual. When Serco took up the challenge of delivering the vision for Fiona Stanley hospital, it saw a rare opportunity to show what’s possible for healthcare in the digital world.

It was therefore natural to turn to BT as ICT delivery partner for its worldwide healthcare expertise. A brand new facility, the Fiona Stanley Hospital project was about more than just digital transformation. No adaptations needed to an ageing estate; no need to integrate older equipment with newer solutions. The hospital could shape its digital design from the basement up.

Serco was contracted to deliver the latest equipment – clinical and non-clinical – and a host of hospital services. They include supplies management, estates, catering and patient entertainment as well as recruitment, training and education.

Everything had to operate over one network. Bill Cotter, former hospital contract director at Serco, explains: “Technology is at the forefront of everything we do here at the hospital and in that respect the Western Australian government had a vision of creating a unified network.”

Robots deliver to wards and entertainment system does double-duty.With second-to-none experience of unified networks, the strength of BT in large transformational projects draws on outstanding professional services and innovation. “BT was a critical partner with Serco,” says Bill Cotter. “It provided its global expertise as well as its relationship with IT vendors to bring the unified network to life.”

The result was a powerful, wide-ranging infrastructure. It offers a petabyte of storage, almost 200 physical servers, 700 virtual servers, 46 applications, 10 firewalls, 320 different network devices, and 2,500 wireless access points. The system supports up to 8,000 people a day including hospital staff, patients and visitors.

Michael Penney, Fiona Stanley Hospital ICT Director at Serco, says: “BT and Serco have a collaborative and partner-centric approach, which is exactly where we want to go.”

The key function of the hospital network is to support 25 digitised services. When it comes to innovation, robotic automated guided vehicles collect and deliver 2,200 freshly prepared meals and other supplies to wards every day.

The combination of Serco, BT, our other partners and the State has been nothing short of remarkable. It takes me home every evening with a smile on my face.

Meanwhile, the patient entertainment system on every hospital bedside doubles as a clinical platform through which clinicians can examine patients’ notes. “It enables the true digital vision of the hospital,” says Michael Penney.

Patient-centric care assured by end-to-end support. There at the start, BT is deeply involved in the hospital’s ongoing digital life too. With sixty-one people in the BT managed services team, an ICT help desk is located onsite, run by BT staff. They provide round-the-clock support for the entire infrastructure, achieving 70 per cent first call resolution and handing off other cases to second and third line responders.

Michael Penney says: “More than anything, between BT and Serco we understand our role in supporting the hospital, especially in how it underpins patient-centric care for the clinicians.”

The partnership of BT and Serco has been enormously productive for the long term. Tim Cavill, Managing Director for BT in Australasia, says: “One of the great things is the future proofing here in Fiona Stanley Hospital. What we’ve set up today will hold both the hospital and the state government in good stead for 30 years’ time.”

The collaboration between BT and Serco was a success for all concerned. It stands as a prime example of what can be done by combining the right digital technologies with the resourcefulness of dedicated teams of frontline people.

Bill Cotter concludes: “The combination of Serco, BT, our other partners and the State has been nothing short of remarkable. It takes me home every evening with a smile on my face.”
