What do apps mean to you? What is your favourite app? How much to do you use apps? Where do you use them? When do you use them? If you could only use one app, what would it be?

This 20 minute talk has two sides to it - one side challenges you to consider the app landscape we live in, we compete in. The other side demonstrates how IBM Bluemix provides a wonderful canvas to create modern apps on - with access to data sources and stores, social media, cognitive computing and brilliant IBM Mobile First technology.

The wider world has different perceptions of apps. Very often the public perception is that apps are games, or social media apps. But the potential for apps is broad and exciting … real world cases - electric companies, health care companies, banks, pollution, air traffic control … I’ve seen apps in the enterprise, and I never cease to be amazed by how companies use them :)

However, in the wider world, for many apps mean quirky, fun, disposable ‘toys’

The truth is that apps have changed how we interact with EVERYTHING. In the very short time the internet has been around ( 20 years ) and the very short time that smartphones have been properly smart ( 8 years ).

Computing 101 - input process output. That’s what an app does too. Curiously the inputs, and outputs are dramatically changing. The processing is becoming more powerful and more imaginative too.

None of this would be possible without the cloud

App Landscape

Many of the most popular apps connect us. To each other? To what’s happening in our family, friends, colleagues, neighbourhood, city, country … for our work, health, banking, travel, investments, services …

… I love this picture because it was created by a developer. It is an app. This picture of the world was created entirely from the data of facebook connections. A brilliant visualization, a useful visualization

Location aware, personalized, context aware. I love this advert from a Canadian grocery store that just gets it. It understands that we’re unique - that our families like their unique kind of food.

It watches us, it lures us in with deals that are unique for us. It remembers what we buy. It is trying to make their grocery store ‘your personal grocery store’ and it is proud to tell you that’s what it wants for you, because it believes it makes a difference.

Do you think it makes a difference?

Today, we need to know our customers - by caring about their data, their decisions, their tastes - or by learning it through social media - or both ways. Traditional companies are failing because their inventory isn’t what differentiates them any more - companies are succeeding because they’re convenient, personal, and contextual. On one side we read about Mexx and Jacob ( clothing stores ) closing down in Canada, on the other side an advert from a clothing store that is growing - Frank & Oak, born on the internet, a personalized tailor.

The new Proof Of Concept. Many of our clients use hackathons to explore, ask about and understand cloud technology. We stand behind Bluemix, and we know how to deliver a brilliant hackathon. Why not use it as a way to figure out opportunities for a fresh, modern and vibrant future for your apps?

With so much technology and networking available at such low cost, what wouldn’t you enhance? What wouldn’t you connect? What information wouldn’t you mine for insight? What service wouldn’t you provide a customer, a citizen, a

student or a patient?

Wise words from Ginni Rometti - CEO of IBM. As much as I’m an advocate for IBM Bluemix, my primary motivation is digital creativity applied to diverse world problems, so I love this quotation.
