1. Cost: Desktops are the price/performance leaders. Desktop computers are nearly always going to offer more power, more features, better reliability, and a better overall value than a laptop.

2. Processing Power: Most high schools and even some middle schools offer classes in entry-level engineering, CAD drawing, and video editing. These applications require computers with significant processing power. While there are laptops that can run power-intensive applications, they tend to be much more expensive than a desktop. As a class, desktops have more power and more features.

3. Screen Size: The same disciplines that require powerful processors require large computer screens in order to visualize progressive project details. While a larger monitor can be connected to a laptop, the setup is awkward to use and requires extra expense and surface space.

4. The Keyboard: Full-sized keyboards with integrated number pads are much more efficient for working with spreadsheets, formulas, and calculations. A separate keyboard also makes it easier to teach typing skills.

6. Upgrades: There are more upgrade options with a desktop. The average desktop can accommodate more RAM than the average laptop. A desktop's multiple bays open up drive options considerably. Upgrading a CPU or graphics card are simple procedures on a desktop, but are usually impossible on a laptop. While desktops are easier and less expensive to modify; the expansion products themselves (hard drives, memory, cards, etc.) are also less expensive to buy.

7. Repair-ability: If desktops are easier and less expensive to upgrade, it makes sense that they would also be less expensive to repair. It's easy to open up a desktop and, once open, usually easy to see where the problem is. Laptop repair takes considerable skill and many parts have to be special ordered.

Sturdiness: Because they are heavier and their weight is distributed more evenly than a laptop, desktops are less likely to get knocked off a table (and less likely to be on a table in the first place). They are also sturdier. Because most desktops aren’t going to fit in a backpack or under a coat, they have a lower risk of theft.

9. Wired Connectivity: Engineering, graphics, and video-related instruction generate huge files. Wireless connections make network file transfer cumbersome and unpredictable. While laptops support wired connectivity, they have to be plugged into the network. The desktop’s fixed wired connections mean the wired network is available all the time. Because it significantly reduces pausing and queue time, wired connectivity is also the best choice for video streaming.

10. Dedicated Usage: Many teachers prefer at least one fixed purpose desktop in the classroom for the sake of reliability. For example an interactive whiteboard connected to its own desktop will provide seamless usage and prevent awkward situations that can occur when teachers connect their own laptops to the board.
