STEAMLAB: Phase One: General Concepts

Josh is taking a Industrial Design course and he would like to design and fabricate a bike that he has been designing in his head for a few semesters. He has now gathered his ideas and his team and is ready to build!

GOALS: Create a cool and interesting destination that invites students to explore, create, learn and collaborate.

• EXPLORE: Create a destination that is bright, inviting, open, and encourages students to explore all skills and equipment.

• CREATE: Provide students with open spaces and opportunities to make “cool stuff” together!

• LEARN: Develop opportunities for students to learn something new.

• COLLABORATE: Redesign the Maker Wing to feel inclusive and promote cross-collaboration between all disciplines and skills.

PROGRAMMING OPPORTUNITIES: What hooks the students to come in and explore? What triggers the students to take a course/come in and work/try something new?

• INSPIRATION: Rotating completed project samples on display featuring various mediums used.

• CONNECTION: Monthly event calendar paired with infographics and diagrams demonstrating cross-collaboration between departments.

• ACTION: Opportunities for multi-disciplinary team collaborations through competitions (local and national).

• CONNECTION: Monthly student facilitated “show, tell and teach” moments

Sam is taking a Textile Design course, she wants to design a wood faceted LED dress for the Spring Fashion Show. She has benchmarked images and is now ready to design. She would like to sketch out some ideas but needs a little help.

“Hey Jamie! I saw your work was featured in the Ideation Lab. I was wondering if you would like to help with me create some sketches for the Spring Fashion Show?”

JOSH: Engineering I.D. & Robotics“...I can help you with the LED light strips that could be sewn into the dress.”

DAN: Fabrication “...could you show me how to use the CNC machine? I’m designing a dress that is designed using wood.”

NICK: Media Production “Hey Sam! How about I document your teams process and make you a mini- documentary for the showcase!”
