What is Delft3D

Delft3D is software meant for creating and executing hydrologic models. Hydrologic models are simplified, conceptual representations of a real world hydrologic system, such as the Rhine.

Delft3D was created roughly 20 years ago, and since that time it has evolved into software with the following characteristics:

• 3D modeling environment:• Hydrodynamics• Sediment transport• Morphology • Water quality

• For• Fluvial environments• Estuarine environments• Coastal environments

Business Cases

1. Sharing knowledge

Deltares can share the knowledge contained in the Delft3D source code with others, and people outside of Deltares can now contribute their knowledge in the source code.

1. Lowering thresholds and increasing usage

By releasing the software, people can use it immediately without first having to buy it. Also an increasing amount of R&D projects require open source licensing. This will result in a larger community and increased usage of the software.

1. Concurrency

By removing the licensing, it’s less difficult to run simulations on clusters and it can be used in larger projects.
