Tips For Parents

View the internet the same way as you would view the outside world—would you let your child walk into unknown neighbourhoods alone? Or with your credit card? Or with people you've never met?

First, clarify that the internet is NOT a PRIVATE PLACE—it is not a journal or diary. It can be accessible to outsiders. Make sure they know it is and will be accessible to you. Avoid claims of “invasion of privacy.”

Set guidelines about internet usage—perhaps limited time?

Tips For Parents

Monitor your kids' internet habits—check browser history, check MSN conversation history, etc.

Keep the internet usage public—keep the computer in a well-travelled area of the house. A computer is not for secrets!

Treat internet behaviour as you would real life behaviour—use of language, bullying, etc.

Be sensitive to the actions of your child while on the Internet—e.g., becomes nervous or flips screens when an adult comes near then this should send a warning signal that they may be hiding something. Learn chat abbreviations (e.g., “P.O.S.”)

Tips For Parents

If you become concerned about the Websites your child is visiting or the chat rooms they are accessing, then talk to your child about it. Be sure to explain to your child why you are concerned. Honesty is the best policy.

Nothing beats being involved with your kids in open communication. Be aware of what is going on in their real lives as well as computer/internet activity.

Dicuss and sign the Internet Safety Contract with your kids.

Install monitoring and/or filtering software

Tips For Kids

Never give out personal information on-line. This can include such things as your address, telephone number, and location of your school or parent's name or their place of employment.

Never respond to obnoxious, sexual or menacing E-mails.

Never send anyone your picture and don't accept anyone else's picture either.

Never agree to get together with someone you "meet" online with out first checking with your parents.

Instead of using your real name online think of a code name that you can use.

Always use your common sense while online. Remember that you never really know with whom you are talking online.
