The term innovation is difficult to understand, not because innovation covers a broad range of meaning, but because it is a meeting point between different

“worlds”.

A bridge between science, technology And the mArket

Applied research at Tudor is characterised by the three pillars which make up our brand: science, technology and the market. This means that we draw from science

the potential for technological and organisational innovation to provide solutions which address the needs of national and international

markets. Thus, we clearly position ourselves as a Research and Tech-nology Organisation (RTO). We have been a member of the European Association of RTOs (www.earto.org) since 2007.

essentiAl multidisciplinArity

Our day-to-day experience shows us that in order for a technological innovation to be sustainable, it cannot be limited to technology alone. It also has to take into account human, organisational, legal and economic concerns. As a result, we believe in a largely multidisciplinary approach.

open innovAtion And networking

At Tudor, we see innovation as a collaborative process of co-conception. It goes without saying that one of our main concerns is to ensure that you have access to quality technologies and innovative methods. And rather than limiting ourselves to technology transfer, we also work with you to increase your capacity for innovation. More and more, the success of an innovation depends on the interaction between

internal and external corporate stakeholders. As a result, we believe that our success is also tied to our relational skills and openness to networks involving final beneficiaries, service and technology providers, as well as

normative or regulatory institutions and research actors.

Thus, we favour multidisciplinary interactions to generate innovative knowledge and savoir-faire within networks, while respecting the position and intellectual property of each stakeholder. This suggests an

alignment of our interests with those of all of our stakeholders. Of course, this open approach goes hand in hand with our capacity to enter into a bilateral partnership with a partner wishing his

own innovations to be subject to a high level of confidentiality.

whAt we doAt Tudor, we combine exploratory science with the realities of society and the business and industrial world. Our mission is to conduct scientific research, to innovate and to provide scientific support to national policies.

reseArch projects

Our scientific research activity is funded by competitive European programmes, the National Research Fund (FNR), certain public administrations as well as industrial and academic partners, particularly within the framework of contractual research.

innovAtion services

Faced with the multiplicity of economic needs, industrial challenges and societal concerns, useful innovation can take many forms. While it appears to be essential to structure our service offer and limit our scope, we believe in remaining open and flexible. For us, this is the best way of delivering solutions that you would rightfully expect from a research and innovation centre like Tudor.

scientific support of nAtionAl policies

Finally, our mission is also to act as a support for innovation and research with respect to defining, implementing and assessing national policies.

we innovAte for youWe don’t just do research for the sake of research. Our ambition is to contri-bute to the increased competitiveness of businesses, industries and public organisations in a practical and measurable way. In order to truly meet your expectations, we anticipate, identify and clarify the needs of the market, by

entering into dialogue with professional associations. We took a step further in this direction by setting up participative governance surrounding priority innovation markets for Luxembourg in 2011.

our motivAtion Applied research is a doubly demanding discipline. On the one hand, there is the scientific requirement of the tools and the method, and on the other hand, the requirement to produce results that can be exploited by the market and society.

Our commitment lies precisely in our capacity to meet this double requirement for your satisfaction.

Over our 25 years of activity, our interdisciplinary approach and the quality of our research have contributed to Tudor’s international influence and more generally that of the Luxembourg scientific community.

Over the same period, we have developed a wide variety of innovative solutions for a large number of sectors of society and the economy. The commitment and skills of our collaborators have allowed us to establish ourselves as a leading player in innovation in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. Some projects in particular have had a decisive impact for businesses and public organisations.

Our capacity for innovation and the recognized utility of the solutions we develop represent the driving force behind our work. We are all the more proud that the relevance of our work has been regularly acclaimed by our clients and partners.

Tudor has developed a patented telemedicine system for cardiac deficiency which has the distinctive feature of measuring Pulse Transit Time (PTT). Set up at home, the MONICARD device sends data to the doctor who, noticing an anomaly, can contact the patient to adapt their medica-tion. This technology, which has been transferred to the spin-off Monitor-it, may result in fewer hospital stays and reduced medical costs.

2 The TAO® computer-assisted testing platform, developed with the

University of Luxembourg, is used by more than 130,000 users in over 36countriesforvariousOECDsurveyssuchasthePIACC(ProgrammeofInternational Assessment of Adult Competencies) and the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment).

3 Created by Tudor, CRTI-B and professional representatives of the

construction sector (project owners, project managers, construction companies), CRTI-weB® optimises cooperation with respect to construc-tion projects. It includes a module for the management of construction site reports as well as a module for the exchange of documents which are useful to the construction project.

(www.csdd.lu), Tudor calculated the ecological footprint of Luxembourg and its inhabitants. An ecological footprint is a consumption indicator calculated for a given country or nation and expressed in terms of the virtual surface (global hectares) needed to cover these consumption needs, inclu-ding CO2 emissions. Tudor’s calculation of this footprint was based on the Global Footprint Network methodology, while adapting it to the specificities of a small country (e.g. workers from neighbouring countries, fuel exports). The results show that Luxembourg’s inhabitants consume 12 global hectares on average while only 2 are available on a world scale. If every inhabitant consumed the way Luxembourg’s inhabitants do, we would need 6 planet Earths to meet all of their needs.

5 The DeStenEE project, undertaken in collaboration with the National

Institute of Cardiac Surgery and Interventional Cardiology of Luxembourg, focuses on biocompatible metal implants knowns as stents. They are used, for example, to keep arteries open in the event of angioplasty and to reduce the frequency of artery constrictions (stenosis). This project aims to improve the design of such implants in order to optimise these procedures and reduce complications caused by unexpected ruptures. Computer-assisted prototyping and virtual testing of stents will make it possible to conside-rably reduce their production cost and shorten their time to market. (Image:

how we go forwArdQuality applied research presupposes access to adequate tools and technology. Far more funda-mentally, our performance and reputation rely on the skills, experience and motivation of our collaborators. They are the central pillar of all our activity.

We encourage them to get involved, be profes-sionally rigorous and use their critical faculties via an efficient ISO 9001 certified organisation. Moreover, we value their interdisciplinary spirit, but also the fact that they are autonomous and take responsibility.

shAred business vAlues

A partnership’s quality is not only measured by the efficient delivery of solutions, but also by the quality of the relationship throughout the entire period of collaboration.

At Tudor, we are not only committed to delivering quality work, we are also devoted to a set of

values which constitute our identity and which positions our institution as a SOURCE OF INNOVATION for you, for the market and for society as a whole.

A heAlthy work environment

We attach great importance to our collaborators’ well-being within their work environment. While we hold them to a high standard in view of meeting your expectations, we also seek to find a balance between the organisation’s needs and every individual’s own career goals and personal growth.

This balance is maintained by a human resources management that has due regard for equal opportunities and is based on mutual respect. It adopts a collective approach, values individual commitment and places its hopes on the diversity of talents to support the organisation’s perfor-mance and creativity.

personAl growth, tudor’s efficiency guArAntee

We encourage our collaborators’ intellectual growth and ongoing development by investing in knowledge sharing via training, mobility and interdisciplinarity on an ongoing basis. Our collaborators benefit from support and have the opportunity to be regularly assessed, which enable them to develop their skills and apply them when new career opportunities arise.

The mission of Tudor is to be a “talent incubator”. It offers a dynamic and innovative environment which contributes to the permanent broadening of its collaborators’ knowledge base. The profes-sional challenges they handle on a daily basis give them opportunities to evolve and improve their employability.
