Cookstoves: Recipe for Engagement
Applicant: John Weeks
Background
In the ‘Greater Mekong Region’ there has been strong uptake of improved cookstoves. This has been due to sustained effort by SMEs, MFIs and nonprofits, with an increasingamount of coordination.
However, most of their data resides in ‘silos’ – institutional repositories.
To leverage their efforts on a global scale, an open data solution would facilitate replication of successful strategies.
Purpose
To encourage ‘Greater Mekong Region’
institutions working in the field of institutional
improved cookstoves (ICS) technologies to enact
‘Linked Open Data’ standards for uptake
reportage, in the process improving ‘grass roots’
reportage.
Main Activities
• Partner with regional institutions for small, yearly awards for village-based cookstove uptake– Award amounts can be very small, i.e. 100 Euro
– Precedents show locally based awards can have strong response
• Publicize award profiles (villages, users, recipes) to facilitate grass-roots clean energy networking– The cultural aspect of cooking and
food should be leveraged to create
positive response and direct
grassroots connections
Main Activities (continued)
• Create Open Data cookstove uptake map web site in cooperation/conferral with regional institutions
Main Activities (continued)
• Develop smartphone
app for reportage …
Main Activities (continued)• and utilize existing SMS / messaging services
Main Activities (continued)
• Develop a plan for country reportage verification with regional institutions.
Main Activities (continued)
• Train regional staff for direct reportage using smartphone app.
• Train reportage staff in use of SMS for local ‘training of trainers’
Main Activities (continued)
• Train local IT/technical staff in use of ‘Linked Open Data’ for reportage.
• Fund travel of local IT/Technical staff to report on results at regional and
international
meetings i.e.
Global Alliance
for Clean Cookstoves,
Clean Energy,
TechCamps &
BarCamps.
Expected Impact
• SME/NGO/ MFI/ Government acceptance of Linked Open Data reportage standards
• Increased uptake of improved cookstove (ICS) technologies, particularly in rural areas
• CO2 emissions reduced and effects of climate change mitigated
• Creation of more energy businesses and market expansion for energy products and services
• Catalyze policy influence on Renewable Energy and Environmental Efficiency
• Reduced deforestation due to use of the improved cook stoves
