In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Items I will be covering:

•Masthead •Fonts •Barcode •Style of photography •Page numbers •Cover lines

Existing masthead

My final masthead

Distorted writing. I used this style of font for my masthead because my main research option was Kerrang magazine.

This font is more plain and doesn’t really suit the rock genre. It was probably used because it is easy to read and remember.

As can be seen at these examples my masthead does follow the rock genre because it’s a little messed up and tattered but still easy to read. The existing mastheads spread across the whole width of the page but mine cuts short because of the barcode. I decided to that because of where I had other things on the page the barcode looked best there. On both existing mastheads nothing is really covering it because they want people to know and remember the name of there magazine and it is the same on mine for the same reason.

I used a simple font so that the reader would be able to find what they are looking for easily.

Used same idea because it is simple and easy to read.

This magazine uses more a satanic font because it would appeal to its target audience and isn't too complex to read. Ichose not to do mine like this because I wanted a font that was very easy to read so the reader can find the page they want easily

Existing barcodes

My final barcode

On both of these barcodes there is a price so that the customer knows how much this product is. It also has the standard barcode on it as well. It also has other information on the magazine.

On my barcode it only used the standard barcode because most of the other information is of the cover of the magazine instead.

My final pictures

All the pictures on the existing products are either posed or live. On the front cover it has a close up of the lead singer of the band Foo Fighters as the main attraction on the magazine. It does this because it will be the main story inside the magazine and then the reader knows what to expect to find inside before hey buy it.

I used all posed pictures for both of these pages because when I looked at my research I saw that the majority were posed. I also had the lead singer from the band I was writing about to pose and I got a close up so people know what the main story in the magazine is about.

Page numbers I noticed during my research that the page numbers really ‘popped’ out the page because they were trying to be one of the main eye catches because the reader looks at the contents to find out where certain stories are to read. I have done in this mine by putting the font size up and putting the colour of the number in red on the grey background. The main difference in the two pictures is that I kept the font very simple so that the reader can read it easily.

Cover lines

Both cover lines are very similar in purpose in design because the purpose of both of them is that the person buying it knows a little bit of what is going on inside before they buy it. The design is similar as well because they both have the main story in big bold writing and in contrasting colours to the background to make it stick out more.
