But then how do I do my job?

Is there an alternate?

YES, Of Course!

Its called “BYOD” – Bring Your Own Device.

And, Its catching up real fast. Amazon recently launched Desktop as a service

called workspaces – making it a one-stop shop for all IT requirements.

All OEMs have DaaS/BYOD as their big agenda for 2014-18

Citrix is the market leader in Desktop Virtualization

VMware seems to have caught up with citrix by embracing PCoIP technology.

Microsoft is trying to stop this. And its PR machinery is already in full swing – touting its terminal services as DaaS.

Buy why does anyone need it? Why do corporates need it? Firstly, remember the ubiquitous bag?

Security, all my important stuff resides in my datacenter all the times. No more DLP investment, USB blocking etc.

No waiting for laptop shipment/desktop inventory – faster provisioning for new joiners.

Centralized and Easier management: my IT can not say there are too many folks to go to.

Work from anywhere without need for porting data.

No need for dedicated laptop/workstations for all the employees

Lastly, this will qualify a company to be in the elite league - using BYOD – snob value? .. Brand advantage?. .. A geeky company tag? – whatever you want to call it.

So, whats the secret sauce?

A smart phone. These days, they run 4-cores in a phone.

A dock – preferably with USB out .. Very much retail

Bluetooth based or USB connectable keyboard and mouse .. Already there

Wireless compatible display .. Most of the newer monitors

Infrastructure:

Wireless corporate network or 3G/4G connectivity

Blade PCs (servers running custom windows 2012 dc edition or Windows 7 OS)

VDI Infrastructure

VDA Licensing
