Happy new year from all of us in the CICS team! It's already looking like an excitingyear for CICS; in this month's CICSbuzz we're delighted to announce both a brand newoffering and some great new enhancements to CICS TS V5.3 and the CICS TS V5.4open beta. Read on to find out more about these new developments and technologies.

Introducing the IBM z/OS Provisioning Toolkit This new offering enables z/OS development environments to be self-service provisionedand deprovisioned by application developers in minutes, without requiring any z/OSspecific administration skills from the developers.

System Programers are able to pre-configure the environments that can be provisioned,

authorize access for specific developers or teams, and configure appropriateprovisioning controls and limits. Application Developers can then use a simplecommand line interface to provision running z/OS development systems from thesepre-configured environments.

Available now at no additional charge to IBM z/OS V2.1 customers, head tohttps://developer.ibm.com/mainframe/zospt/ to find out more and to download.

The site includes tutorials to help you get started, for provisioning a CICS developmentenvironment and for provisioning an MQ development environment. We also have atutorial for configuring a CICS and Liberty development environment on the CICSDevCenter.

Java in CICS - Support for IBM MQ as JMS provider

The MQ V9.0.1 resource adapter is now supported as a JMS provider in the CICS LibertyJVM server. This means Java EE applications running in either standard-mode orintegrated-mode Liberty can inter-operate with MQ via the standard JMS API. Read morein this blog from the MQ team.

Simplified z/OS upgrades

As introduced in the CICS TS V5.4 open beta, CICS TS V5.3 has been enhanced to

use system autoinstall to install program definitions for Language Environment asrequired. This removes the need to maintain definitions in the CSD group CEE anddramatically simplifies upgrading z/OS releases, as the CEE group on all CICS CSD willnot have to be refreshed.

CICS Explorer

It's now even easier to navigate CICS Explorer with the introduction of hyperlinks. Inviews and editors, zFS Unix File System paths to files or folders are now displayed as ahyperlink. Clicking one of these will open the relevant location in either the z/OS UNIXFiles View or an editor, prompting for authentication if required. Find out more in thistutorial on the CICS DevCenter

Asynchronous API in the CICS TS V5.4 open beta

This API is enhanced to include the EXEC CICS FETCH ANY command, which allows aparent transaction to receive a response from any completed child transaction - ratherthan waiting for a specific child to complete. In addition, both EXEC CICS FETCHcommands now have non-suspending wait options, as well as timeout controls.

Statistics for asynchronous services are now available to enable workload analysis andmonitoring, and flow control has been enabled for asynchronous transactions, ensuringstability for high and mixed workloads.

For more information on the updates to the asynchronous API, see our blog post.

Other enhancements in the open beta

Flow control at start-up and shutdown. This capability gradually flows work to aregion at CICS intialization, helping to avoid problems where work arrives in a regionbefore it is truly ready to process it.

CICSPlex SM integration and resiliency. CICSPlex SM management tasks within amanaged CICS region now run as system tasks. This removes these tasks from user taskviews and avoids problems caused by the inadvertent purging of these tasks.
