Backup 101 - Full Backup

All backups start with a full backup. For agents that support non-full backups, the full backup becomes a baseline to which subsequent backup types are applied.

For example, if an agent supports differential or incremental backups, a full backup must be performed before these backups can be initiated.

Backup 101 – Full Backup

A full backup contains all the data that comprises a subclient’s contents. A new copy of all data –changed and unchanged -- is made with each full backup.

Backup 101 – Differential Backup

A differential backup contains only the data that has changed since the last full backup.

Most differential backups are cumulative. This means each differential backup contains all changes accumulated since the last full backup.

Differential Backup Pros

Differential backups, on average, occupy less storage space than full backup

Differential backup process is much faster than creating full backups

Differential backups can provide a faster RTO

Backup 101 – Incremental Backup

An incremental backup contains only data that is new or has changed since the last backup.

On average, incremental backups consume far less media and place less of a burden on resources than full backups.

Incremental Backup Pros

Requires fewer storage resources than both full and differential backup

Can be performed more frequently than full and differential backup because there is a reduced backup window

Can be preformed in real time

Synthetic Full Backup

Synthetic full backup consists of incremental backups and unchanged portions of the original full backup.

Synthetic backups are performed at the end of a specified period, such as weekly, and they provide the same benefits as full backups

Synthetic Full Backup Pros

Consumes fewer resources than full backups because unchanged files are never backed up again

Results in a lighter load for production because synthetic backups are created on the backup repository

Backup Features

Backup features that exist in addition to these main four include snapshots, deduplication and continuous backup.

Some backup services combine main types of back up with these features, allowing for a more complete backup system across platforms.

How to Find an Optimal Backup Solution

Major deciding factors when choosing a backup solution include:

RTO (Recovery Time Objective and RPO(Recovery Point Objective)

Complexity of a company’s IT infrastructure

The size of the company or organization

Finding an Optimal Backup Solution

RPO is the maximum targeted period in which data might be lost from an IT service due to a major incident. This number will determine the time between backups.

RTO is the targeted duration of time within which a business process must be restored after a disaster (or disruption) in order to avoid unacceptable consequences associated with a break in business continuity.

Small Business Backup Solution

A small company may get away with only using basic full backup if they don’t generate large amounts of data

Small companies must also have a high RPO or Recovery Point Objective for this to work. In other words, business can still continue if recent data is lost.

Businesses with a low RPO that don’t generate large amounts of data may prefer differential backup.
