With the costs of operating data centres rising all the time, those responsible for the management of the centres are under increasing pressure to increase the productivity of every aspect of the infrastructure. Managers must not only consider the IT equipment itself, but also analyse how the site is powered and how heat and humidity are controlled. This is best achieved with a close working relationship with the FM team. This collaboration has to be supported with transparent and pertinent information. The latest software tools can instantly highlight the issues relating to the day to day running of a data centre. By adopting these tools organisations can foster stronger connections between the IT and FM teams.

Strategies has developed CADWINFM for Data Centresto bridge the requirements of both disciplines. The tool facilitates the creation of common management processes that are then supported by data creating: A complete overview A tool for managing operational phases A tool to manage critical business issues Control over environmental management practices.

The Visual Convergence of IT and FM

CADWINFM for Data Centres is a brand of Strategies SA

The functionality of the solution is driven by the different disciplines key to managing an effective data centre. Improving customer service and creating a collaborative environment are just two of the universal aspects for consideration.

CADWINFM for Data Centres is a unique marketconcept. It is the only software that enables the integration of all graphic data in 2D, 3D and alphanumeric formats. The system enables easy sharing and amendment of those records within a strict protocol.

Using this data enables : Optimisation of capacity status Analysis and implementation of best practice. Integration of monitoring and control tools.

CADWINFM for Data Centres creates a completedashboard for the data centre. The data is organised so that the most frequent challenges met by those managing data centres can be addressed: Understanding occupation ratios Identifying free rack space PUE status Compliance with Code of Conduct standards Accessing robust data for strategy planning.

Implementation Management

Capacity management Cable management

CADWINFM for Data Centres is able to model any type of equipment found in a data centre. A 3D model is produced complete with graphical references, alphanumeric dimensions, reference points, a range of photos from different angles, images and plans. Supporting dwg, bmp and xml file types enables the information to be stored using existing data sources.Elements that can be modelled include: Racks, panels Material assets Cables and connectors Circuit breakers Electrical circuits Power packs PDU, CDU Power strips.

Information from catalogues and manufacturers documents can also be integrated to ensure a complete set of data relating to every aspect of the equipment.

Once integrated the data is able to be manipulated to enable users to: Search Amend to specific requirements Create reports for occupation, power usage, BTU usage, utilisation by department or client, measuring carbon footprint.

Any solution that facilitates the management of infrastructure must provide tools that can solve the following issues: Location of consecutive 5 Us The status of the power supply in relation to demand The best phase on the patch that doesn’t impact on the other phases.

CADWINFM for Data Centres identifies suitable locationsfor new servers by providing managers with speedy and reliable data. Colour coding of certain elements is just one way to make the process more intuitive for the user.

The criteria for consideration include: Number of consecutive Us Occupied zones Optimum power Weight

Log and record keeping

The tracking of operations is possible thanks to the archive within the system. It is possible to search the archive using the following filters: User Date Space Type of equipment.

A screen print of the information in pdf is available.

The cable management module within CADWINFM for Data Centres enables the management, documentation and analysis of phased networks in line with EN 50173 -1 and TIA 568.

CADWINFM for Data Centres captures a complete description of the cabling aspects : Patch Panel Copper and fibre optic ports Plans and installation schematics.

The functions available include : The automatic generation of a cabling plan including network chain Up and down stream navigation Localising elements from the network chain Colour coding linked to the status of the connection Visibility of free ports, occupied ports, copper and fibre optic Import of Excel files relating to cabling.

The visuals available include : On plan Front of rack views 3D images Structural cable management.

The reports include: List of network chains by socket outlet, patch panel, and location Complete set of documentation for network chains, that includes photos, images, manufacturers information.

Management of graphics and 3D visuals

Project and scenario planning Document management

CADWINFM for Data Centres is a brand of Strategies SA

CADWINFM for Data Centres includes a unique imaging tool that is compatible with dwg file types enabling the user to build a three dimensional plan model. The integration of

the graphic and alphanumeric data creates a platform for management interpretation and cross-departmental use of the information. A specific reference to infrastructure management can be cross-reference

with other information that would not traditionally have been considered.

The space planning module for CADWINFM for Data Centres is able to: Retrieve all plans in a dwg format Classify all the areas within a data centre such as data centre hall, reception, technical room. (The codification of these areas will match existing coding.) Modify plans there and then at the workstation To export the plans in a dwg format

In order to optimise the physical infrastructure it is important to be able to create simulations for possible future requirements.

The functionality of the infrastructure life cycle management module enables simulations to be run, both on a plan and as a process management change. Equally simulations can be run by changing the status of a document or more traditionally by changing the status of a piece of equipment.

The project management module enables the amendments of documents to create folders of information with specific work files attributed to: Area Floor Building Location Equipment.

This enables the modelling of the new infrastructure to be completed.

It is possible to model a new data centre by going to TIER III and creating a list of possible implications of a new space. These could be in relation to equipment or number of projects. Each scenario enables a comparison which the system reviews showing the most optimised solution, thereby reducing the analysis time.

Integration management

Architecture

Applying any planning regime requires that information from different sources is brought together in a common format. The process eliminates duplication and is critical to any project.

CADWINFM for Data Centres supports xML and SqLtechnology thereby enabling the automisation of data integration.

Integrating data : Management of LDAP directories Capture of information from cabling folders Integration of plans in a dwg format Space allocation by department files Information relating to a list of values, manufacturers catalogues etc. Information linked to environmental protocols

Integration with other software and systems

CMDB Maintenance management Budget management SAP. Monitoring tools Sun Identity manager

Other connections are available which can be discussed as part of the implementation stage.

The system enables collaboration between every user involved in the day to day operation of the data centre. Increasing the efficiency of the operational management is key.

It is critical that the portal displays key information that will enhance the user experience and improve the systems effectiveness.

The interface must have the following functions : Workflow management and mapping of work order requests Tracking and follow up of work order requests A dashboard and SLA monitoring facility Visibility of plans Occupier directory Access to reports to build a comprehensive dashboard to monitor activity Level of usage of the halls PUE Access to other software programmes.

CADWINFM for Data Centres has been developed based on the following market standards :Oracle 10 11 GJ2EEJSFJBOSS for workflowxMLAvailable in a CITRIx environment.

The solutions enables a specific database to be developed around the following structures : Windows architecture for modifying graphics in 2D, 3D and alphanumeric formats Web-based architecture for user interface, work order requests and viewing plans and graphics.
