PIT---Projected Infrared Touch

PIT is a new type of infrared multi-touch technology with excellent performance and special mechanical/design features to bring IR touch into the future. Industrial designers are no longer limited to Projected Capacitive or Resistive “Touch Windows” to achieve modern design.

AHow It Works

Invisible IR light

The infrared beams generated by emission diodes are reflected through a prism-like light guide and go across the front glass surface. gTouch position calculation is IR type with performance enhancements to meet Windows 8 criteria.

Prior to PITThere was no one touch technology that can meet users’ diversified

requirements

Only responds to finger or capacitive stylusPrice, reliability & quality challenges in large f ( i l 18 ”)format (typical over 18.5”)High NRE for customized formatEMS challenges when system integrationLong leadtime due to low yield for large formatAnti-vandal options limited

Flat Bezel Areas are Important

Utility and Design

Mobile device leads in design (i e Mobile device leads in design (i.e., iPad) with structural rigidity important

Old Windows UI slowed down touch acceptance by consumer

Now, Windows 8 Touch has defined flat bezel areas as important feature to its bezel areas as important feature to its user experience concept

Android designs also follow “flat bezel Android designs also follow “flat bezel area” trend, of course

PIT’s Environmental Characteristics

Can be sealed to meet IPX1, IP54 & IP64 standards

PIT is well-suited for industrial/rugged environments

Any glass or plastic can be used (subject to meeting surface flatness constraints for low fly height) High ambient-light performance is excellentg g pBut, not for mobile devices: edges are susceptible to drop impact

Summary: GeneralTouch PIT Benefits

Market requires more options than P-Cap and today’s optical/multi-touch IR for new design directions and trends

PIT costs less and is more flexible than typical P-Cap for vertical-market volumesPIT solves the majority of the issues with camera-based optical and traditional infrared touch

PIT also extends what is possible today with P-Cap by adding touch surface material flexibility and active bordersWindows 8 logo test certified, but PIT can also address those who don’t need all of the specifications for a Win8 certified deviceWide size-range with a single technology: 15” up to 84” without any performance variationEasy to integrate, no P-Cap like EMC & grounding issues, and no camera re-calibration issues as in optical imaging
