Vert Rotors

Makers of miniature, scalable low-vibration / high-pressure compressors for aerospace

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Vert Rotors has developed a totally new, innovative design of a compressor that runs at very low vibration and achieves high pressure, up to 16 bar(g) The problem of the state-of-the-art technology is: small rotary compressors do not produce pressure differential of over 1.5 bar, while small piston compressors produce high levels of noise and vibrations. Vert’s compressors solve those problems and produces high pressures with minimal vibration. Vert has a design and manufacturing facility in Edinburgh, Scotland, with 5-axis high-precision CNC machinery. The company has 9 full-time employees, 7 of them are engineers We were awarded a contract in the CDE Affordable Space competition in 2015, and based on the successful output of this work Dstl has funded us through a second contact to progress our system to the next level. We have six customers in the EU and the USA, and we received a clearance from the US Department of State to work on an ITAR project.

Rotary cryocooling system

Low-vibration ‘nano’ cryocooler solving the problem of vibration

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Space provides the initial, stretching application of this new technology. Medium or long wave InfraRed (IR) imaging satellites require active cooling. Such system also require that the cooling solution be low vibration (forimaging stability) and highly efficient. They should be very small and light. To radiate the required heat energy into space, a pump would need to heat the fluid by developing pressure ratio of 12:1. The problem of the currently available space cryocoolers is that they are based on piston compressors that produce vibrations and do not produce a sufficient pressure differential/are very inefficient in terms of power. Low-vibration cryocooling has become technically possible with the development of the total new, novel (patented) Conical Rotary Compressor (CRC) designed and produced by Vert Rotors

Success to date

• pressure ratio of 16:1 • low-vibration cooling

in Earth-like conditions

Presentation Notes
The Rotary Cryocooling System or ROCS as we refer to it has already demonstrated a pressure ratio of 16:1, and a cooling capacity with R134a refrigerant in TRL4 tests. If demonstrated successfully at cryogenic (120 degrees Kelvin) temperatures, and at the efficiency claimed, it would be a step change in capability for these classes of systems in providing cooling solutions for future UK military satellites. We are now working on producing a new system that will be tested in a vacuum chamber to represent the space conditions. The tests are planned for November this year.

What next? Preparing for space A scalable compressor for: • medical devices • wearable chillers • other military

applications

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Preparing for space: it will take a few years to complete integration and testing should a flight opportunity arise. Medical applications: wearable oxygen concentrators. Wearable chillers to control body temperature. Interest in the UK and US for other military applications

We’re looking for… Partners/integrators in aerospace • partner provides a problem (need for low-

vibration compressors) • Vert provides a solution Our role is: supplier of compressors and compressor systems
