“Dramatic differences from one market to the next can impede efforts to quickly go to market. But with Equinix, we were able to leverage their comprehensive scale and readily deploy into three markets on three continents within three months.” Raj Dutt, CEO, Voxel

The SituationWhen more than 1,000 companies rely on you to deliver their Internet applications and keep their IT infrastructure humming, you need a reliable, scalable, high-speed global data center platform. That’s why Voxel first partnered with Equinix ten years ago, and why it turned to the provider of global data center services as it was preparing to launch its new innovative VoxCLOUD service offering.

The SolutionVoxCLOUD’s underlying data center platform and service delivery network is critical to its success. Deploying its cloud service offering within Equinix’s International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers was a given for Voxel. “We’ve built our international network and content delivery network (CDN) on top of the Equinix global data center services delivery platform over the past seven years. This was a logical extension of our relationship,” explains Raj Dutt, CEO for Voxel.

By choosing Equinix, Voxel was able to more quickly and efficiently build out their cloud service platform, enabling them to successfully tap into the growing market for cloud services.

Why Equinix

Building on a Solid FoundationThe first order of business for Voxel was establishing a highly reliable and scalable platform for its VoxCLOUD offering. Voxel turned to Equinix because their experience as a customer has proven that Equinix’s global service delivery platform provides the unique combination of highly reliable data center operations, rich carrier-neutral connectivity, broad architectural flexibility, and the on-demand global scalability needed to build and deploy Voxel’s world-class offerings.

Deploying with Ease To tap into the burgeoning market demand for cloud services, Voxel wanted to quickly roll out its VoxCLOUD offering. According to Dutt, “We couldn’t afford a six to nine month lead time to turn up a location.”

Equinix’ vast global footprint of IBX data centers combined with operational consistency across its facilities and dedicated account teams enabled Voxel to quickly achieve its goals. In 38 metropolitan areas, Equinix has facilities in every major market where Voxel wanted to establish a service presence. Moreover, with each facility being nearly identical in terms of layout, service features, engineering standards, and operational practices, Voxel always knows what to expect.

“Dramatic differences from one metro to the next can impede efforts to quickly go to market. But with Equinix, we were able to leverage their comprehensive scale and deploy into three markets on three continents within three months,” explains Dutt.

Because Voxel’s initial international deployments went so well, they also decided to further extend the reach of VoxCLOUD Asia by deploying a service node into the Equinix data center in Hong Kong. Within 30 days, it was up and running – without sending any Voxel employees to the data center. Today, Voxel is leveraging Equinix in eight strategic metropolitan areas around the world: Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C., New York, Silicon Valley, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Establishing the Standard for PerformanceWhen companies deploy applications in the cloud, they are usually very concerned about the end-user experience. They understand that latency matters and that it can cripple customer satisfaction, end-user productivity, revenue, and brand. To address those concerns, Voxel was intent on delivering the best network performance available in the market. “Being in Equinix IBX data centers puts us in close proximity to hundreds of different networks and through these networks, closer to our customers. As a result, we have the some of the lowest latency and fastest service paths to our customers,” says Dutt.

Independent tests confirm the performance of the Voxel network architecture enabled by Equinix. In a benchmarking report produced by CloudHarmony.com, Voxel was ranked as having the fastest network of US-based cloud service providers. “By effectively leveraging Equinix’s carrier neutrality, global peering exchanges, and B2B interconnection services, we can ensure a high quality end-user experience for our customers,” add Dutt.

Benefiting from Carrier-Neutral ConnectivityEquinix’s rich carrier-neutral connectivity affords Voxel the opportunity to further optimize customer connectivity to its VoxCLOUD services. This enables Voxel to best manage underlying telecommunications costs, as well as ensure a high quality customer experience. “Consistent global peering options let us control our performance and costs. Plus, we are benefitting from another key advantage of being in carrier-neutral facilities – numerous providers are competing for our business,” explains Dutt.

In addition to performance and cost advantages, Equinix’s carrier-neutral model delivers other benefits. “We’ve had negative experiences in non-carrier-neutral data centers when providers went out of business or had peering disputes. The Equinix model shields us from these issues,” explains Dutt. “With Equinix, we always have a multitude of options to stay optimally connected to our customers, contain our telecommunications costs, and deliver leading levels of service performance.”
