2. Who is the Poverty Committee? The Poverty Committeeis comprised of threemembers of City Counciland three citizenrepresentatives. Two main issues;Affordable HousingFood Security 3. Hunger at Home Food security is a basicneed affecting Brandonand surroundingcommunities. It is not just about foodavailability, but abouthealth and nutrition. 4. What is Food Security? When all people at all timeshave access to sufficient, safe,nutritious food to maintain ahealthy and active life.- The World Food Summit of 1996 5. Food security continued Food Matters Manitobaencompasses;Accessing foodFood SafetyNutritionSustainable food production (agriculture)Self-reliance (local food systems & foodskills)Culturally acceptable foodSocial justice 6. To establish a City of Brandon Food Charter. Striving towards ensuring all citizens, regardless ofeconomic and social status, have access to sufficientaffordable and healthy food to meet their needs andbe free from hunger.Purpose & Vision 8. A Food Charter represents the communitys voice,values and priorities for a healthy and self-reliant foodsystem.What is a Food Charter? 9. Continued Promotes thedevelopment of foodinitiatives and policywithin the communities,organizations and at thelocal government level. 10. To bring people together to talk about and work onlocal food system and food security challenges. Cities with a Food Charter already established include;Vancouver, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Thunder Bay,Kingston, Toronto and Ottawa.Why a Food Charter? 11. Examples of Food Charters: 12. The City of Brandon can provide leadership toensuring food security by paving the way formunicipal Food Charters in Manitoba.Leadership 13.
