It guides you towards the most basic concepts of biomimcry that a person needs to know before making a presentaion in a very simple and lucid but technical manner. the description of each slide is given below: Velcro from the Burr Velcro was invented in the year 1941 by George de Mestral.[5] He was inspired by burrs sticking to his dog's fur while out walking.[5] De Mestral noticed when examining a burr under a microscope that burrs had hooks on them, which caused them to stick to a rough surface.[5] Modern-day Velcrocopies this design, and it sticks generally to loosely-wound fibres for easy attachment.[5] It has the same hooks, and as we know, this is very useful for clothing and other uses, as it is easy to do up and undo: this is what makes it so convenient and widespread in application (for examples, from a blood pressure arm collar to an alternative to shoelaces or zippers).[5] Lotus-Effect Hydrophobia Lotus leaves are well-known for being clean in muddy areas. In fact, lotus leaves have a unique 'bumpy' texture that allows water to wick along the leaves and simply clean them without the aid of anything else.[5] This “lotus-effect” has many applications: scaling from the self-cleaning ability of entire buildingsin the rain, to the easy cleaning of dishes and cutlery.[5] Imagine not having to use dish detergent, and just using water to wash dishes. This lotus-effect hydrophobia works, because as the water rolls down, it takes all the dirt with it due to the special texture of the leaves with this similar effect on its applications. Many more applications for this effect are in development.[5] Transportation: Learning from Kingfishers When the West Japan Railway Company had a noise problem with one of their train, the fastest one in the world, the train’s chief engineer and a bird-watcher decided to look in to Nature for solution. In the end he decided to design the front of the train after the kingfishers, a bird which dives from the air into water with very little splash. As a result, the train got quieter and uses 15% less electricity even while the train travels 10% faster (12). The reason for this is the idealaerodynamic shape of their beak allowing the bird to cut through sudden pressure changes. Similar pressure changes take place when high-speed trains enter a tunnel. The result is load thunderclaps of noise as the train goes through the tunnel. One of the fastest train in the word is the Japanese Shinkansen Bullet Train.
