According to Gartner’s 2013 Hype Cycle for Storage Technologies, big data is approaching its peak of inflated expectations - meaning it hasn’t got long before it plunges into the trough of disillusionment.

And, boy, are those expectations high. A new survey from IDG Enterprise shows that 59% of CEOs expect their big data investment to improve the quality of decision-making.

53% expect it to speed up decision making, 47% to improve planning and forecasting, and the same number to improve the development of new products or services and revenue streams.

Mostly, IT managers are focusing on storage and servers, although IDG expects a big increase in Cloud infrastructure investments over the next three years, along with data analytics, data mining and data visualisation.

Unfortunately, business leaders don’t always understand just what a strain big data can put on a company’s infrastructure and staff. Unreasonable expectations mean that CIOs can often be left feeling that they’re being asked to spin gold out of straw.

One of the biggest problems is budget - but that’s not the only hurdle. Organisations are finding it very difficult to hire and retain skilled staff, particularly data scientists, data analysts, data architects and data visualisers.

As a result, businesses are increasingly looking outside the enterprise for help with their big data projects.

The IT leaders driving big data investments are looking to vendor partners to help prove the business case for investment. Vendors that can demonstrate how their solution will help them monetise their data through improved decision-making capabilities and metrics, and provide best practices will be seen as the more valuable partner.Matthew Yorke, CEO, IDG Enterprise

There’s often a tendency to gather and keep data for data’s sake, with the vague idea that, at some point down the line, it will be valuable.

But will it? Not if it’s hard to access, unreliable or insecure.

A much better strategy is to focus from the start on the data that’s actually relevant to already-identified business needs, before scaling up as required.

This lean approach is enabledby using the Cloud. It gives high availability - indeed, Amazon boasts of a 99.9% monthly availability for its S3 Cloud storage. Data is durable, thanks to error checking and self-healing processes to detect and repair errors and device failures - processes that would be enormously expensive to carry out in-house.

And if all works out well, Cloud storage is scalable pretty much indefinitely. Good news for IT systems management.

We’ll leave the last word to Holger Kisker, principal analyst at Forrester Research. He cites three reasons why big data can make a lot of sense in the Cloud:

Big data requires a spectrum of advanced technologies, skills, and investments. Do you really need/want

this all in-house?

Big data includes huge amounts of

external data. Does it make sense to

move and manage all this data behind

your firewall?

Big data needs a lot of data services. Focus on the value

of your differentiated data analysis

instead of big data management.
